Yakuza/Like a Dragon Developer Lays Out 20th Anniversary Plans

As a long-time fan of the Yakuza series, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement and anticipation as we approach the 20th anniversary of this incredible franchise. It feels like just yesterday when I was first introduced to Kazuma Kiryu and his world in Yakuza 1 back on the PlayStation 2. The games have been an integral part of my gaming life ever since, providing countless hours of immersive storytelling, engaging gameplay, and memorable characters that have become like family to me.

On December 8th, we celebrate the 19-year anniversary of the Like a Dragon series, originally known as Yakuza when it debuted in North America. In a video shared today, creators Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio acknowledged this milestone while hinting at future developments by 2025. It appears that Sega and RGG Studio have grand plans leading up to the 20th anniversary, starting with the upcoming game Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii. Fans can also expect fresh merchandise and continuous content throughout the year. Excitingly, this isn’t just limited to Japan!

Starting today, Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio’s director, Masayoshi Yokoyama, shared that we will be organizing several events and making announcements in the lead-up to our 20th anniversary next year. Moreover, he revealed plans to establish a global distribution network to offer a variety of merchandise and content to fans not only in Japan and Asia but also in the Western regions, starting from next year.

Although it’s too early to predict next year’s announcement, fans are already eagerly asking for more installments in the Like a Dragon series, particularly a third game in the Judgement spin-off series. It’s been three years since Lost Judgement was released, and there’s no news about a potential third game yet. Similarly, fans have been anticipating Yakuza Kiwami 3 ever since the second game came out in 2017, but so far, there’s been no sign of it. Needless to say, there are plenty of announcements that would excite the fanbase!

Over nearly two decades, the Like a Dragon series has become one of Sega’s cornerstone franchises, standing alongside Sonic and Persona as key pillars for the company. This success has allowed Sega to revive dormant titles like Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio. The brand’s importance to the publisher is evident, and its future developments are eagerly anticipated. Few fans may have foreseen a game like Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, so the next announcement from RGG Studio could surprise everyone.

In the meantime, enthusiasts can only anticipate the excitement next year might bring! It’s heartening to know that RGG Studio is preparing something significant for the 20th anniversary, and we look forward to seeing what they have in store. Whether you’re a long-time fan of the series or just beginning your journey with Like a Dragon, there should be plenty to delight everyone.
