Everything From the Old DCEU That Is New DCU Canon (So Far)

As a dedicated fan who has spent countless hours immersed in the vibrant world of DC Universe, I find myself both thrilled and intrigued by this new approach to continuity that James Gunn is bringing to the table with his innovative take on the DC Extended Universe (DCEU).

From a passionate fan perspective, I’m thrilled about the expansion of the DC Universe (DCU) with Max’s “Creature Commandos,” a mature animated series penned by James Gunn. This isn’t a fresh start for the narrative that commenced with 2013’s “Man of Steel” and concluded with “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” in 2023. Instead, this series is part of the DCU family tree, having initially been conceived under the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). Although the DCEU might seem to be gone, it’s not entirely buried, echoing a memorable exchange between Henry Cavill’s Superman and Ben Affleck’s Batman in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” (a film that doesn’t feature in the new DCU’s canon).

The first two episodes of “Creature Commandos” made connections to the events portrayed in “The Suicide Squad” film from 2021 and the “Peacemaker” series from 2022, both of which were directed by Gunn within the DCEU (DC Extended Universe). Since then, Gunn, who is now a joint head of DC Studios with producer Peter Safran, has categorized these previous works as “light canon” for the DCU. Gunn’s upcoming “Superman” movie is set to kick off this new universe officially.

Last year, Gunn announced that nothing in the DC Universe (DCU) is considered canonical until next year’s release of “Creature Commandos” and subsequently “Superman.” This means that while some actors will reprise their roles from previous stories, and certain plot points may align with those from past films, shows, and animated projects, they are not officially part of the continuity until these two productions.

“We talk about events from the past, and once we do, those events are considered part of the official DC Universe history.

Similar to how DC Comics has restructured its comic book series by altering their canonical history with events like “Crisis on Infinite Earths” and “Flashpoint”, sometimes changing and other times preserving parts of the storyline, as demonstrated in the 2023 movie “The Flash”.

Based on Gunn’s directive, here’s what from the DCEU is canon in the DCU so far:

Amanda Waller and Task Force X Exposed

In the eighth episode of Peacemaker season 1, Leota Adebayo (Danielle Brooks) unveiled her mother, Amanda Waller (Viola Davis), as the leader of Project Butterfly, a covert government operation that was part of the black-ops program Task Force X. Due to this exposure, Congress halted the operations of Task Force X between the events depicted in Peacemaker and Creature Commandos.

Project Starfish

In “The Suicide Squad,” Waller assembled a fresh Task Force X under Colonel Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman). This included Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney), T.D.K. (Nathan Fillion), Blackguard (Pete Davidson), Mongal (Mayling Ng), Javelin (Flula Borg), Savant (Michael Rooker) and Weasel. They were sent to Corto Maltese, a small island nation off the coast of South America, with the objective of infiltrating Jotunheim and destroying Project Starfish: Starro the Conqueror, a starfish-like alien Waller had warned would be devastating if controlled by the Luna regime.

Rick Flag’s Death

In The Suicide Squad, Waller mentioned Rick Flag Jr.’s heroic death in Corto Maltese to General Flag, later on referring to it as his passing that occurred approximately two years prior when speaking to Princess Ilana Rostovic (Maria Bakalova) in Pokolistan. It was uncovered that the U.S. government was involved in Project Starfish and the illicit experiments conducted by The Thinker (Peter Capaldi) in Jotunheim, with Waller deploying Task Force X to conceal this information. Since Flag intended to expose this classified data to the media, he met his end at the hands of Peacemaker, who was assigned by Waller to prevent any leaks from leaving the island under any circumstances.

In a turn of events, Task Force X successfully thwarted Starro’s plan, but Bloodsport cleverly forced Waller to release them by exposing the secret files on the drive. The potential consequences when Flag Sr. discovers Waller was involved in his son’s demise will be delved into during Peacemaker season 2.

What Isn’t DCU Canon?

As per Gunn’s statement, when something from the DCEU is referenced in the DCU, it signifies that the event occurred. Gunn has clarified that neither version of the “Justice League” (2017 and 2021) took place, implying that both “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” (2016) and “Suicide Squad” (2016) didn’t happen either. This is because the DCU doesn’t have a Justice League yet, which means the DCEU’s Justice League and Task Force X were formed in response to Superman’s death (played by Henry Cavill).
