As a lifelong fan of DC Comics and animated series, let me tell you, I am absolutely thrilled with the direction James Gunn’s Creature Commandos is taking! It’s refreshing to see an animated series that focuses on telling a compelling story instead of setting up sequels or relying excessively on cameos.
In the first two episodes of Creature Commandos, the narrative aligns with James Gunn’s plans for the DCU as shared in numerous interviews, emphasizing the main story rather than establishing sequels or overemphasizing cameos. However, it’s important to note that Creature Commandos is not isolated from the broader DCU; instead, the characters reside in a world teeming with costumed heroes and eccentric villains. This is suggested by subtle hints, references to other DCU characters, and clever Easter eggs, which are incorporated through expositional dialogue, fictional news broadcasts, and hidden nods.
Circe, Wonder Woman, and Themyscira
In the thrilling premiere of “Creature Commandos”, I found myself drawn into the sinister schemes of Circe, who takes center stage as the primary adversary. In the expansive DC Universe, Circe is known as an exiled Amazon, hailing from the legendary civilization of Themyscira – a place that needs no introduction for those familiar with Wonder Woman’s epic tales. Although I am well-aware of her infamous reputation as one of Wonder Woman’s most formidable foes, it’s clear that Circe’s appearance in this series hints at grand plans for the Amazonian princess Diana.
What’s curious about Circe’s introduction is that the news reporting explaining her attack on Pokolistan underlines how Themyscira is still viewed as a fabled place by many. Since people still don’t recognize the island as an actual place in the DCU, it’s fair to assume Wonder Woman began her heroic career not long ago. That’s a refreshing take on Diana’s history, as she can be contemporary to Superman and Batman, creating a welcome balance between DC’s Trinity.
In the DC Universe, more details about the past of Themyscira will be unveiled as the “Paradise Lost” series progresses in its development phase.
Superman and Metropolis
1) At the start of Creature Commandos, you’ll notice the emblem of Galaxy Broadcasting System (GBS), which stands for Galaxy Broadcasting System, prominently displayed during news broadcasts. In DC Comics, GBS is a powerful media corporation based in Metropolis, home to Superman and the Daily Planet. This company shares connections with Intergang, a criminal organization originating from Apokolis, who typically carry out their activities in Metropolis.
As a fervent admirer, it’s intriguing to note that Circe’s mugshot suggests she has been handcuffed in the city of Metropolis before. Given her formidable magical prowess, it’s plausible that one or more superheroes had to apprehend her. Since she’s graced the halls of Metropolis’ penitentiary, it’s not too much of a stretch to imagine Superman was the one who sent her there. Here’s hoping the upcoming “Superman” film acknowledges this intriguing detail. Fingers crossed that we’ll catch a glimpse of a team-up between Superman and Wonder Woman in the movie.
Peacemaker and The Suicide Squad
During the discussion with Rick Flag Senior, Amanda Waller brings up incidents from Peacemaker and The Suicide Squad (2021). She explains that due to Congress prohibiting A.R.G.U.S. from sending human inmates on dangerous missions, she has no choice but to employ monstrous beings for Task Force M. This situation arises following Waller’s daughter, Leota Adebayo, revealing her mother’s covert operations to the public, an event that transpired at the end of Peacemaker Season 1. Director Gunn has confirmed this development, except for one scene, as part of the show’s canon.
Waller and Senior Flag bring up Operation Starfish during their conversation in Corto Maltese, but it’s a bit unsettling because Rick Flag Jr., played by Joel Kinnaman, died during that very mission. This dialogue suggests that the events of Operation Starfish occurred in the new continuity as well, making The Suicide Squad more canon within the DC Universe, given that past events are recognized as part of the DCU only if they’re mentioned in official productions like Creature Commandos.
While the DCU version of Operation Starfish might resemble the movie, there are differences to be expected until particular characters and incidents are explicitly mentioned. For now, consider John Cena’s Peacemaker killing Rick Flag Jr., as well as the fight against Starro, as being part of the established storyline. However, the rest remains subject to potential modifications.
In Season 2 of “Peacemaker,” it’s expected that we’ll gain a better understanding of which parts of “The Suicide Squad” are considered canon, as John Cena is reprising his role as Rick Flag Sr. The series is also said to explore the death of Flag Jr., which could potentially set up a revenge storyline for Flag Sr. If this happens, we might delve deeper into the DC Universe’s version of Operation Starfish.
New episodes of Creature Commandos hit MAX every Thursday until January 9, 2025.
