As a die-hard DC fan with decades of comic book history under my belt, I must say that James Gunn’s decision to launch the DCU with an animated series like Creature Commandos has left me both intrigued and impressed. Having watched the evolution of superhero stories on the silver screen, it’s refreshing to see a fresh approach that skips origin tales in favor of diving straight into engaging narratives.
Beginning in November 2022, James Gunn and Peter Safran assumed control over DC Studios to design a storyline lasting a decade, encompassing films, television shows, and even video games. Just three months later, they unveiled an extensive roster of projects centered around notable figures like Batman as well as lesser-known characters such as The Authority. It was anticipated that the new DC Universe would launch with a major theatrical debut. However, the initial installment of this latest DC cinematic universe is “Creature Commandos,” a TV-MA animated series focusing on a group of second-tier characters. Although this decision might cause some surprise, it aligns well from both a business and creative perspective.
As an avid fan, I’m thrilled to see Gunn’s vision for the DC Universe, where tales of caped crusaders and power-hungry villains are no longer the norm, having been part of our lives for decades. His aim is to bypass well-known origin stories and delve right into more engaging narratives. For example, we’re all familiar with Bruce Wayne’s transformation into Batman, so rehashing another cinematic origin story seems unnecessary, both in terms of time and resources. Instead, Gunn plans to introduce Damian Wayne in ‘Batman: The Brave and the Bold’, focusing on the Bat Family, a segment of the Dark Knight lore that has been largely overlooked by most live-action adaptations.
The main disadvantage of this method is that it prevents Gunn from establishing the framework for his universe. However, the series “Creature Commandos” addresses this problem by using each episode to delve into the history of the DCU, depicting events that occurred decades and even centuries prior to Clark Kent assuming the Superman identity. Though “Creature Commandos” has its own narrative, the initial episodes subtly reference the larger DCU while providing hints about its chronology. As the series progresses, revealing more about Task Force M’s members as suggested by trailers, “Creature Commandos” provides some valuable worldbuilding before the release of the “Superman” movie.
Marketing “Creature Commandos” as a precursor or “appetizer” to the DC Universe, Gunn has effectively safeguarded DC Studios from potential series’ flop. If “Creature Commandos” fails to resonate with viewers, it’s straightforward to dismiss it and concentrate on “Superman” as the main DCU introduction. However, given that “Creature Commandos” is garnering positive responses from both critics and audiences, the series has already secured a win for DC Studios, boosting excitement for Superman, whose box office success is crucial for the DCU’s prosperity. The potential risks are minimal compared to the benefits DC Studios could reap from “Creature Commandos”, an assessment that can be easily verified by examining budget figures.
Creature Commandos Will Allow DC Studios to Make More Animation
It’s not disclosed how much it costs DC Studios to produce seven episodes of Creature Commandos, but given that it’s significantly less than the cost of a live-action film’s theater release, which can run into hundreds of millions of dollars. For instance, Invincible has an estimated budget of $750,000 per season, while Marvel Studios’ animated projects cost around $20 million per season. Even if DC Studios is splurging on Creature Commandos, the seven episodes are unlikely to exceed a $30 million budget – a generous estimation at best. The costs cover a star-studded cast and top-notch animation, still a fraction of what DC Studios would spend if Creature Commandos were a live-action film. Gunn, a renowned Hollywood director known for delivering high-quality results on a smaller budget, oversaw the production of The Suicide Squad at a cost of $185 million to the studio.
From a film enthusiast’s perspective, it’s evident that the success of “Creature Commandos” could pave the way for DC Studios to churn out an array of additional animated projects, all while keeping production costs low and maintaining quality. This strategy allows us, the fans, to indulge in a richer universe through TV shows, specials, and even full-length movies – all without compromising on the storytelling or visual appeal that the animated medium offers so uniquely.
From a management perspective, animations offer an edge because much of the work isn’t tied to specific actors or stars. This allows animation studios to keep producing new episodes even when voice actors are unavailable, which is not feasible with live-action productions. For instance, in the series Creature Commandos, the voice cast needed to come in for several days to record all their lines for an entire season. This scheduling flexibility is beneficial as it allows accommodating everyone’s schedule, including hiring well-known Hollywood stars who may be unavailable for extended periods due to other commitments.
Starting the DCU (DC Universe) with the animated series “Creature Commandos” demonstrates a brilliant fusion of artistic ambition and business savvy. This show serves as both a testing ground for strategic decisions and a foundation-laying tool, enabling DC Studios to introduce their universe’s extensive history at a lower financial risk. Essentially, by opting for animation instead of live-action, Gunn and Safran have fashioned an environment where they can take daring creative chances, explore lesser-known characters, and cultivate audience interest in their broader narrative vision, all while maintaining cost control and production flexibility.
New episodes of Creature Commandos hit MAX every Thursday until January 9, 2025.
