Following the apprehension of Luigi Mangione for firearm offenses in Altoona, Pennsylvania, and his identification as a significant figure in the December 4 murder of the CEO of an insurance company in New York City, UnitedHealthcare expressed optimism that this arrest may bring some solace to those affected by the 50-year-old’s untimely demise.
The company expressed their wish that today’s arrest may offer some comfort to Brian’s family, acquaintances, coworkers, and all those impacted by this devastating event, as they communicated to NBC News. They also extend their gratitude towards the law enforcement for their efforts, and will continue collaborating with them in this ongoing investigation.
The insurance company added, “We ask that everyone respect the family’s privacy as they mourn.”
Though Mangione hasn’t been officially accused regarding the deadly shooting in Midtown Manhattan, the NYPD stated at a press conference on December 9th that they found a ‘phantom firearm’ and silencer on him. These items appear to match the weapon used in the murder.
A person residing in Maryland was identified at a McDonald’s eatery. According to a press briefing given by New York Police Department Commissioner Jessica Tisch, this individual was recognized by an employee who then contacted the local law enforcement agency.
The NYPD Chief of Detectives, Joseph Kenney, also verified that they discovered a three-page, handwritten document on the individual, which appears to reveal insights into his motivation and mental state, associated with Mangione.
It has been reported that Mangione was found in possession of several false identification cards, one of which was allegedly used as “Marc Rosario” by the suspect who checked into a New York City hostel, according to various sources knowledgeable about the ongoing investigation.
Based on Kenny’s statement, it seems that authorities didn’t recognize Mangione by name before his detention. Moreover, he appeared to have no previous arrests recorded within the country.
Details about Mangione are gradually emerging after his arrest, such as his achievement of earning both a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania in May 2020, which was confirmed by NBC News to be an Ivy League institution.
Prior to his apprehension, authorities discovered a backpack in Central Park on December 6th that they suspected was linked to the gunman. As per NBC News reports, the bag held fake Monopoly currency and a coat.
In my professional opinion, based on the information I’ve gathered, authorities suspected the armed individual might have departed from New York City. They shared with CNN that they possessed video evidence showing him hailing a taxi and arriving at the Port Authority Bus Terminal, but unfortunately, there was no footage available to confirm his exit from the terminal.
On December 5th, the Thompson family – comprising Thompson’s spouse (Paulette) and their two sons – posted a message outside their residence in Maple Grove, Minnesota.
The news of Brian’s tragic, needless death left us deeply saddened,” read a statement, acquired by NBC News. “Brian was a remarkably kind, giving, and gifted individual who embraced life with enthusiasm and positively impacted countless others.
They added, “Most importantly, Brian was an incredibly loving father to our two sons and will be greatly missed. We appreciate your condolences and request complete privacy as our family moves through this difficult time.”

Brian Thompson served as CEO at UnitedHealthcare, having initially joined the company back in 2004. He ascended through various roles within the organization before assuming the CEO position in 2021.
He was shot and killed in New York on Dec. 4, 2024. Thompson was 50 years old.
6:46 a.m. on December 4, 2024, NYPD officers from the Midtown North Precinct were dispatched to a shooting incident outside the New York Hilton Midtown hotel, as reported by NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny in a morning press conference. Upon arrival at 6:48 a.m., they discovered gunshot wounds on the victim, Thompson, located on his back and leg. The chief detective stated that EMS transported Thompson several blocks to Mount Sinai West, where he was pronounced dead at 7:12 a.m.
As per Kenny’s account, the unidentified shooter, who has not been apprehended yet, made his way to the New York Hilton Midtown on foot, arriving outside the hotel five minutes ahead of Thompson’s scheduled arrival. In a recording, Kenny explained that Thompson was observed walking solo towards the Hilton at 6:44 a.m., having left his nearby hotel for a UnitedHealth Group investors conference slated to start at 8 a.m. on that day.
During a briefing on December 4th, Kenny stated that the suspect seemed to be a man with lighter skin, who was wearing a light-hued jacket (possibly brown or cream), a black face mask, sneakers with black and white patterns, and a conspicuous gray backpack.
Following the news of his death in a shooting, Brian Thompson’s family expressed their deep sorrow for his loss. A statement from the family, obtained by NBC affiliate KARE in Minneapolis on December 5, read, “We are devastated to learn about the senseless taking of our dearly cherished Brian. Brian was a man filled with love, generosity, and talent who lived life to its fullest potential and positively influenced countless lives. Above all, he was an incredibly loving father to our two sons, and his absence will be deeply felt. We kindly ask for your sympathy and privacy as we navigate through this painful period in our lives.
Paulette, Thompson’s wife, mentioned that her husband had received threats as well. She explained this to NBC News on December 5th, saying, “Yes, there were indeed some threats. To be honest, I’m not sure, but it seemed like perhaps a lack of media attention? I don’t have the specifics. All I know is that he told me there were certain individuals who had been making threats against him.
