As a movie buff who’s had the privilege of witnessing the meteoric rise of Nicola Coughlan, I can confidently say that 2024 was indeed her year! From Derry Girls to Bridgerton, and now Doctor Who, she’s been an unstoppable force in the world of entertainment.
2024 was truly my year as a film enthusiast! Following the success of Derry Girls, I’ve spent the last 12 months gracing our screens with a new Channel 4 sitcom alongside Lydia West and starring in the third season of Bridgerton. To top it all off, I’m wrapping up the year with an unforgettable guest role in Doctor Who’s Christmas special, sharing the limelight with Ncuti Gatwa’s remarkable Doctor. It doesn’t get much better than this!
Are you feeling tired after appearing in the comedy-drama “Big Mood,” stealing the spotlight in “Bridgerton,” and embarking on a festive adventure with the Doctor?
This year has been an extraordinary whirlwind! It’s been packed with activities – I believe we visited as many as eight countries during the Bridgerton press tour – and in a heartwarming fashion, I’m proud to say that I’ve been part of two shows I hold dear. To top it all off, I’ll be spending the end of the year enjoying Doctor Who, a rare family-friendly endeavor for me, as I gather with my loved ones during Christmas to watch it together.
How old are they?
They’re 8, 13 and 15. I took them to Back to the Future recently on the West End, and they adored that. That really hit the spot. I feel like Doctor Who lives in that world, so we could be onto a winner.
What else do you enjoy watching at Christmas?
As a devoted fan, I can’t wait to immerse myself in the enchanting world of Little Women once more, this time through both the recent cinematic adaptations. First up will be the 1994 film, as it holds a special place in my heart from my childhood years. I’ve decided to revisit this timeless tale while tackling my holiday decoration, specifically the tree trimming, which I postpone every year because I prefer a real tree that stands tall and proud, rather than toppling over and casting a dismal shadow on Christmas Day.
What are your own Christmas traditions?
Every year, there’s a negotiation among me, my mom, and my sister regarding the responsibility for each dish during our Christmas dinner. Although I enjoy cooking, I tend to be particular about certain aspects, like who gets to make the potatoes. Additionally, I have a soft spot for creating mini-appetizers for Christmas Day. The assortment of foods associated with Christmas is one of my favorite things. Since I’ll soon be celebrating Christmas with friends, I plan on having everyone contribute a dish.
Speaking of old friends, do you keep in touch with the Derry Girls gang?
Louisa Harland and I frequently converse – she recently visited my home. However, everyone has been exceptionally busy lately! Interestingly, I’ve got a bottle of champagne that was presented to us during the wrap-up for series 1, and I’ve been planning to host a dinner where we can all celebrate, raise a toast to Siobhán McSweeney’s well-deserved BAFTA award. It’s been a long time coming.
Have you got any other plans this year?
I’ve resumed working on Bridgerton, the phenomenal series I’m fortunate to be a part of. This time, it’s more relaxing for me as Luke Thompson and Yerin Ha are taking the lead in their love story, making it captivating. It’s delightful to join in and simply enjoy the experience. Working on it feels like returning home. Recently, I finished another project, Magic Faraway Tree, about two months back.
So that was a really cool experience. And I’m meeting up with some of my cast mates from that. Working with Rebecca Ferguson has been amazing. And then I was in another comedy ensemble with Dustin Demri-Burns and Oli Chris, and Nonso Anozie. It was weird because I’ve never been just with all the boys! So that was quite fun. But I’m meeting them for a Christmas lunch as well.
And any New Year’s resolutions? What are your hopes for 2025?
What’s it like knowing that from now on, certain fans of Doctor Who will always be eager to talk about the show?
What can we expect from the Christmas special, Joy to the World?
This production is wonderfully crafted, blending humor, emotion, and a dash of the extraordinary with adventure and thrill, not forgetting aliens! It’s the perfect choice for unwinding after Christmas dinner. With Steven Moffat, Russell T Davies, and Ncuti at the helm, it feels like a warm homecoming. And let me tell you, Ncuti carries that same charm in real life too. I consider myself fortunate to be part of this amazing journey.
You and Ncuti were both in Barbie – did you know each other well?
I didn’t know Ncuti Gatwa extremely well due to my short stint on Barbie and our brief encounter, but I’ve always been an admirer of his work. His magnetic presence as a performer is something that captivated me, someone who enjoyed watching him immensely. When he was on Sex Education, I found myself thinking, ‘I hope I get the opportunity to act alongside him someday.’ And when that chance came, it was truly extraordinary.
If given the chance to visit any historical era during Christmas, which specific time and place would you choose to spend the festive season?
In one part of the series, the Doctor boards the Orient Express. I was captivated by its stunning scenery and requested to tour the set. There’s an allure to train travel, especially during the 1930s with its elegance. Celebrating New Year’s Eve on such a train would be extraordinary. It would make for an ideal way to ring in 2025.
