As a film enthusiast with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the sentimental keepsakes taken from the set of Gavin & Stacey are nothing short of heartwarming. It’s not every day you get to be part of a beloved series for 17 years and create characters that resonate so deeply with millions around the world.
On Christmas Day, when the final episode of Gavin & Stacey hits the screens, it won’t just bring a tearful goodbye to the audience members, but also to the actors who have breathed life into these characters for an incredible span of 17 years.
Of course, during the shooting of the last episodes, some members of the cast chose to grab souvenirs from their time working on the production – and they’ve recently disclosed the mementos they secretly took off the filming location.
Some individuals chose to keep their characters’ outfits, for instance, Rob Brydon mentioned he “essentially took all of Bryn’s wardrobe”, and they confessed that certain items like “the apron from when he cooked Christmas dinner during the last special” might appear in charity auctions.
Larry Lamb grabbed “a few of Mick’s shirts and a pair of shorts,” Neil the Baby actor Oscar Hartland collected his character’s “white Converse sneakers,” and Stacey actress Joanna Page took “everything from Stacey’s costume in the last episode, including her shoes and jewelry.
Page brought a painting that was hanging in Stacey and Gwen’s house and a decorative glass duck from Stacey’s living room sideboard home with him.
Apart from her, it’s also not just Ruth Jones (creator and star of Nessa) who has taken ornaments. She managed to get hold of “the glazed egg holder from Gwen’s, which was always perched on the windowsill in her kitchen. It’s shaped like a hen.” This is a reference to the one that Gwen had.
As a cinephile, I’d put it like this: “In an amusing turn of events, Peter’s co-star Adrian Scarborough shared he ‘borrowed’ a ‘special ring’, alluding to the one used in their vow renewal scene from season 3. On the other hand, Dawn’s actress, Julia Davis, playfully admitted she attempted to secretly bring Peter back home with her.
Simultaneously, Robert Wilfort (also known as Jason) broke into Gwen’s home, stealing a few love spoons from the living room wall and some egg cups from the kitchen. At the same time, Melanie Walters took Gwen’s shoes and bags, possibly to donate to a fashion charity, as well as the calendar from the final event.
As a film enthusiast, I found it intriguing when my co-star Steffan Rhodri decided to keep two of his character’s stylish shirts. He mentioned he might wear them for a suitable event or auction them off at the perfect moment. On the other hand, Alison Steadman, another esteemed cast member, shared that she always hangs onto her call sheet and cherishes it. Each one bears the names of everyone involved, making it a unique keepsake.
Ultimately, Mathew Horne shared a heartfelt tale connected to his misplaced artifact, stating, “Previously, I had an item from Gwen’s residence after our last collaboration. It was a captivating antique etching depicting daffodils.
In the making of the last special, as I had recently lost my mother who adored daffodils, I requested a keepsake from the set. Generously, our production designer granted it to me. Additionally, he framed the office door sign of Gavin from the early series, which is very dear to me.
The actors have hinted at a heartrending finale for the beloved sitcom, but viewers will need to be patient for another couple of weeks to learn how things conclude for Gavin, Stacey, their loved ones, and for Smithy and Nessa following that proposal.
