28 Years Later: First Trailer Returns to Danny Boyle’s Terrifying Apocalypse

As a fan who lived through the terrifying zombie apocalypse of the early 21st century and spent countless sleepless nights huddled under blankets while watching every flicker of movement outside my window, I can confidently say that the return of Danny Boyle’s “28 Years Later” has me on the edge of my seat. The original “28 Days Later” was a cinematic masterpiece that forever changed the landscape of zombie films, and its sequel, “28 Weeks Later,” only solidified that legacy.

A chilling portrayal of a zombie apocalypse, “28 Years Later,” is set to return to the big screen next year. Original collaborators, Director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland, have joined forces once more for this fresh thriller, which serves as a continuation of both “28 Days Later” and “28 Weeks Later.” With the title hinting at its timeline, the movie transports us almost three decades into a world that’s barely recovering (or has recovered very little) from the apocalypse.

28 Years Afterward is one of the most eagerly awaited horror films of 2025, and Sony has decided to give fans a sneak preview of what’s to come. The initial trailer for Boyle’s zombie reappearance was unveiled early Tuesday morning, and you can watch the entire trailer in the video at the top of this page.

28 Years Later features Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jack O’Connell, Erin Kellyman, and Ralph Fiennes in its cast. Contrary to what may initially appear, this film does not serve as a conclusion to a trilogy, but rather marks the beginning of a new trilogy of its own.

In the new trilogy, it was Boyle who took the helm for the inaugural episode. Subsequent films, directed by Candyman and The Marvels’ director Nia DaCosta, are in the pipeline. As per Fiennes, both of these movies have already been filmed.

Fiennes shared with IndieWire that the project consists of three movies, two of which have already been filmed. The story takes place 28 years into a dreadful pandemic in Britain where the infected are aggressive and violent. The narrative revolves around a young boy seeking a doctor to save his ill mother. Accompanied by her, he navigates through the picturesque northern English countryside. However, they must be careful as the infected lurk in forests, hills, and woods nearby. Remarkably, they encounter a doctor who initially appears strange but ultimately proves to be a source of goodness.

On this island, connected to the mainland by a heavily guarded causeway, a group of survivors makes their home. However, when one of them ventures off the island and delves into the heart of the mainland, they stumble upon secrets, mysteries, and horrors that have evolved not only the infected but also other survivors.

28 Years Later hits theaters on June 20, 2025.
