As a lifelong Disney enthusiast who has grown up with the magical world of animated features, I can’t help but share my excitement about Lin-Manuel Miranda‘s enthusiasm for a live-action remake of “Lion King 1½.” Having watched this underrated gem countless times, I wholeheartedly agree that it is the “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern” of the extended Lion King universe, offering a delightful spin on the beloved story.
Even before “The Lion King” hits theatres, those behind the film are already discussing potential future projects. In a conversation with egmr.ru, composer Lin-Manuel Miranda appears eager about the prospect of a live-action rendition of “Lion King 1½”. He commends the direct-to-video movie, which might encourage fans to revisit it.
Given that Mufasa bridges both sequel and prequel roles for the 2019 version of The Lion King, it’s only fitting to explore other offshoots and reimaginings. Miranda expressed her hopes: “I’m keeping my fingers crossed for a live-action adaptation of Lion King 1½. You see, that’s the Rosencrantz and Guildenstern of the extended Lion King realm, and it’s quietly brilliant!” For those not in the know, The Lion King 1½ debuted directly on DVD in 2004. It follows Timon and Pumbaa as they watch the movie in a theater with the audience while providing commentary.

In this upcoming movie, Nathan Lane and Ernie Sabella reappear as Timon and Pumbaa, while Matthew Broderick takes on the role of Simba, Robert Guillaume plays Rafiki, Moira Kelly portrays Nala, and Whoopi Goldberg, Cheech Marin, and Jim Cummings voice the three hyenas. This film continues the storyline from the popular animated series “The Lion King’s Timon & Pumbaa,” which aired on CBS between 1995 and 1999. Additionally, it incorporates aspects from “The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride” to demonstrate that all parts of the franchise were working together at the time.
It’s uncertain whether Disney is planning to include such things in their current photorealistic series, given that the company has never remade any of its direct-to-video sequels from the past. In fact, it appears Disney is allowing those productions to become obsolete. However, as Miranda humorously pointed out, Disney often caters to fans’ desires, so there’s always a chance that they might reconsider.
On this coming Friday, December 20th, you’ll find “Mufasa: The Lion King” gracing movie theaters. Meanwhile, not one but two versions of “The Lion King” are available for streaming right now on Disney+. Additionally, you can enjoy titles like “The Lion King 1½”, “The Lion King’s Timon & Pumbaa”, and other franchise offerings on the platform as well.
