As a longtime admirer of the Castlevania franchise, I couldn’t be more thrilled about the upcoming second season of Castlevania: Nocturne! The promise of the “biggest, craziest fight scene ever” is enough to get any fan’s pulse racing.
We’re merely weeks from the comeback of one of Netflix’s highly acclaimed anime series, Castlevania, as Castlevania: Nocturne season 2 – and it’s clear that excitement is mounting!
For one thing, co-showrunner Kevin Kolde recently told Tudum that season 2 features “the biggest, craziest Castlevania fight scene ever”, which is quite the promise given what has preceded it.
In this upcoming season, Richter, along with his vampire-hunting team, will be accompanied by Alucard. Together, they’ll hasten to thwart Erzsebet Báthory’s wicked schemes that could bring disaster upon the world.
The show draws inspiration from the widely recognized Castlevania video games, and similarly to its forerunner, it has received accolades for its striking aesthetics and its bold portrayal of intense violence.
As I eagerly anticipate the return of my favorite spooky saga, I find myself pondering when Castlevania: Nocturne’s second season will grace our Netflix screens. Here’s what I’ve gathered about this enticing upcoming chapter:
Will there be a second season of Castlevania: Nocturne?
Yes!
Since the initial Castlevania series was praised as one of Netflix’s top anime productions and the first season received great feedback, Netflix confirmed on October 6, 2023, that Castlevania: Nocturne would be coming back for a second season. You can watch the announcement video below.
When is Castlevania: Nocturne season 2 coming out?
In December 2024, it was officially announced that the second season of Castlevania: Nocturne will premiere on Thursday, January 16th, 2025.
On April 16th, 2021, it was first revealed in Deadline that the show was being developed, with rumors suggesting that the series would take place during the French Revolution and introduce fresh characters instead of following the original cast from Castlevania.
A bit over a year ago, at Netflix’s 2022 Geeked Week, they announced that the title was Castlevania: Nocturne.)
A year after that, on July 27th, 2023, we made the official cast announcement, and at last, the first season of Castlevania: Nocturne premiered on Netflix on September 28th, 2023. The second season is set to arrive approximately sixteen months later.
What is Castlevania: Nocturne?
In the role as successor to the Castlevania series, Castlevania: Nocturne finds Richter Belmont, a relative of key characters Trevor and Sypha from Castlevania, joining forces with an eclectic band of outcasts amidst the French Revolution to thwart the apocalypse. Life is never boring for a Belmont!
From my perspective as a film enthusiast, the narrative of Nocturne draws inspiration from both Castlevania: Rondo of Blood and Castevania: Symphony of the Night. Interestingly enough, these two titles have quite contrasting histories – while the former was critically acclaimed, the latter initially struggled financially but eventually found its place in pop culture thanks to a devoted fanbase.
In Season 2, Richter and his team of vampire slayers, now including Alucard, find themselves in a desperate struggle against time. Their adversary is Erzsebet Báthory, the Vampire Messiah, who aims to harness the immense power of the goddess Sekhmet. If successful, she could cast the world into an unending night of dread and fear.
Who will return for Castlevania: Nocturne season 2?
Behind the scenes of Castlevania: Nocturne, there’s been a shift. Warren Ellis, the previous writer, has been replaced by Clive Bradley. Meanwhile, Kevin Kolde, who previously served as co-executive producer on the initial series, is now taking over as the new showrunner.
In terms of the cast, the following are expected to return for season 2:
- Edward Bluemel as Richter Belmont
- Pixie Davies as Maria Renard
- Thuso Mbedu as Annette
- Sydney James Harcourt as Edouard
- Natassja Kinski as Tera Renard
- Zahn McClarnon as Olrox
- Franka Potente as Erzsebet Báthory/Sekhmet
- James Callis as Adrian ‘Alucard’ Tepes
- Richard Dormer as Emmanuel / The Abbot
- Iain Glen as Juste Belmont
- Aaron Neil as Mizrak
