New Donkey Kong Country Returns HD Trailer Shows Off Changes to the Switch Version

As a long-time fan who’s been through countless hours of banana hoarding and barrel-bashing adventures, I can’t contain my excitement for Donkey Kong Country Returns HD coming to Nintendo Switch next month! It’s been a while since we’ve had a new DK game, and the Switch era hasn’t exactly been a banana feast. But with the definitive version of this already well-regarded game on its way, it looks like our dreams are about to come true!

Next month, “Donkey Kong Country Returns HD” arrives on Nintendo Switch, and a fresh overview trailer has been unveiled. For those who are unfamiliar with past versions of the game, this trailer provides a detailed glimpse into the gameplay and enemies you’ll encounter, as well as offering a sneak peek at the storyline. In the narrative, the mischievous Tiki Tak Tribe uses mind control to enslave Donkey Kong Island’s animals and steal DK’s banana stash. Throughout the adventure, DK and Diddy will navigate through 80 levels, swinging and jumping to rescue the day.

In essence, “Donkey Kong Country Returns HD” is making its third appearance, having been followed by a 3DS version in 2013. The latest trailer provides a detailed glimpse into the Modern mode, which returns from the 3DS version and offers a more lenient gaming experience compared to Classic mode. Players opting for this setting will receive additional hearts and have access to new items available for purchase at Cranky’s Shop. These additions include the Crash Guard, which allows players to survive two Mine Cart or Rocket Barrel accidents, as well as the Green Balloon, enabling them to endure one fall. Regrettably, there’s no option to switch between Classic and Modern modes once chosen. The new trailer for the game can be found below.

Originally launched on Wii in 2010, Donkey Kong Country Returns introduced motion controls that demanded players to jiggle the Wii Remote to perform certain actions. In contrast, the upcoming Switch version offers standard button controls more akin to those in Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. For those who wish to replicate the original experience, they can still wobble the Joy-Cons. Notably, the new release on Switch will support two-player co-op using a single Joy-Con pair. Furthermore, levels exclusive to the 3DS version will return in this updated edition.

Fans of Donkey Kong have had a tough time lately, as there hasn’t been any new game released in the Switch era. Instead, they’ve made do with ports such as “Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze” and remasters like “Mario vs. Donkey Kong”. However, it seems that Nintendo’s next system might bring more to cheer about, but for now, “Donkey Kong Country Returns HD” appears set to be the ultimate version of an already acclaimed game. The release date is on January 16th, and preorders are available right now on the eShop, as well as at retailers like GameStop, which has announced a special offer for those who buy it.
