Theresa Nist will always have love for Gerry Turner.
Following the initial Golden Bachelor’s announcement that he had been diagnosed with an incurable form of blood cancer earlier this year, she remembered her response upon hearing the devastating news a month prior to their separation in April.
According to Theresa, during her conversation with People on December 11th, she mentioned that her visit to Gerry in Indiana took place in March. She revealed that this news was incredibly shocking and left her feeling very upset.
She mentioned about his Waldenström’s macroglobulinemia, a rare, slow-growing form of blood cancer, saying, “He informed me that this was the type of cancer he could potentially live longer with.
Speaking from my expertise on lifestyle matters, I too find myself holding on to optimism when considering how Gerry might maneuver through this challenging diagnosis at the age of 71. Just as I do, I believe he’ll have a positive outlook towards his future.
She remarked, “He’s an incredibly optimistic individual, much like myself, and I am confident that he’ll put forth his utmost effort to ensure this is a positive encounter.” Furthermore, I have full trust that it will turn out positively, that the cancer will be one that won’t impact his life significantly, allowing him to live long, healthily into old age.
On the very same day that Gerry disclosed his health update to the public, Theresa made her comments. During this period, Gerry was open about how his diagnosis impacted their marriage, having first met on The Golden Bachelor, and then getting married during a live ceremony in January.
In an interview with People, he shared that as Theresa and I were working diligently to discover our path, determine where we would live, and figure out how to make our lives function smoothly, I received an unfortunate diagnosis of cancer.
Initially, I shared with my partner Theresa that I had been diagnosed with a suspected blood disorder by the medical team. However, it wasn’t until several weeks later, upon receiving my actual cancer diagnosis, that I disclosed this life-altering news to her.
He recalled that the conversation was challenging for him, but it was short and she seemed quite astonished by the news, which was completely understandable.
In the process of reevaluating his life’s goals and adapting to his current situation, his bond with Theresa started to weaken even more.
Gerry clarified, “I aimed for my life to carry on as typically routine as could be, and this notion made me think that ‘as normal as possible’ implied spending time with my loved ones – my family, including my two daughters, their husbands, and my granddaughters.
He continued. “And the importance of finding the way with Theresa was still there, but it became less of a priority.”
In a part, the 72-year-old chose to reveal his health updates to put to rest any remaining speculations or doubts concerning the reasons behind his split with Theresa.
He noted, “Once the initial shock of such news subsides, after several days or weeks, when you gather your thoughts and reflect upon what truly matters to you, it’s then that you begin to advance. I trust that people will eventually recognize how significantly this affected my choices, and likely Theresa’s too.
He added, “Perhaps they’ll reconsider the situation from a new perspective, understanding that it might not have been an impulsive, hastily made decision as some may think. There could have been other factors at play.
And in the meantime, Gerry is looking to the future with a positive outlook.
He emphasized his intention to fill his life with as much joy and excitement as he could manage, cherishing each experience along the way. When it’s time for him to go, he won’t linger with remorse, for he knows that’s simply part of life’s journey.
