As a seasoned gamer with countless hours spent navigating the treacherous landscapes of The Zone, I can tell you that The Ward is a force to be reckoned with. They are the militaristic powerhouse that keeps the other factions on their toes and the monolithians at bay.
In Stalker 2: Heart of Chernobyl, the game’s setting presents a dramatic landscape filled with grotesque creatures, perplexing abnormalities, and individuals struggling to exist amidst it all for various reasons – some straightforward, while many others remain enigmas even to them. Each character has their unique purpose within The Zone.
In numerous installments of the Stalker game franchise, a group known as The Ward makes an appearance. Despite their frequent appearances both within the games and the Zone itself, discerning their true nature can be challenging. But, who exactly are these militaristic inhabitants that find themselves at home in such a harsh environment?
Who Is The Ward?
In the context of The Zone, Ward – often simply called ‘Ward’ – is a significant military group. Known for their formidable firepower, they are undeniably one of the largest and best-equipped forces in the region. This has made them both respected and feared by other factions.
In earlier editions of the Stalker series, it’s noted that Ward is financed by the government. This explanation becomes clear when you consider their equipment, including personal weapons and body armor, as well as their possession of operational vehicles, which are quite rare throughout the Zone.
What Do They Want?
The aim of The Ward is relatively straightforward – they strive to become the dominant power within The Zone and assert control over it in every aspect. To achieve this, they have been acting as the military arm supporting SIRCAA’s scientific projects in that region.
In other words, the specifics or final aim of this objective remain unclear since Ward isn’t very forthcoming with information to those who aren’t part of his immediate team.
So far, they have exerted their dominance over The Zone by setting up outposts strategically at crucial spots within the region. These outposts often stand on repurposed military sites and significant locations throughout The Zone, particularly at checkpoints along the perimeter of the security barrier.
In The Zone, they additionally take on the role of an unofficial law enforcement, especially when rival factions appear to be growing stronger. Frequently, they get involved in disputes with larger gangs of stalkers, and their confrontations with the Monolith faction are particularly notable.
Who Is Their Leader?
Alexander Korshonov assumes command of activities within The Zone, often appearing personally at critical locations and significant events within the region. This is unexpected given his military rank as a Colonel.
It appears that his position might be similar to, or even equivalent to, a temporary military Colonel. This suggests a possible link between Ward and the government’s military hierarchy. Remarkably, it’s worth noting that Ward also recruits a significant number of its forces from private military contractors.
Where Are They Based?
The Ward is situated at the old Chemical Plant’s site, which lies central on the map, within the larger part of the map that shares its name.
This area on the map, resembling a peninsula, lies to the west of the Lesser Zone, serving as the starting point for Stalker 2.
Additionally, they set up command centers at locations where they’re either probing for answers or attempting to restore peace, often leading to a scenario resembling martial law.
How Do They React To Other Factions?
As a gamer, I can’t say I always see eye-to-eye with the Ward faction. Their ideals, centered around strict authority, often clash with my more liberal leanings. They seem to view Monolithians with suspicion and hostility due to our unconventional beliefs, quirky behaviors, and mysterious links to The Zone’s enigmatic powers.
Factions not associated with The Ward can also feel his wrath, yet they usually respond aggressively towards other factions or lone wanderers only when provoked.
In contrast, it should be noted that they aren’t hesitant to utilize other groups for their own purposes in their undertakings. This was most evident in Operations Zenith and Fairway, where Ward enlisted the help of lone stalkers and factions such as Freedom and Noon, primarily for military support.
