As a film enthusiast with over three decades of watching British television under my belt, I must say the return of Jason Merrells to Waterloo Road is nothing short of a delightful surprise. Having followed Jack Rimmer’s journey from the show’s early years, it feels like reuniting with an old friend who has come back home after a long and adventurous sojourn in Dubai.
Actor Jason Merrells, who originally graced Waterloo Road, is coming back for a special appearance in the upcoming revival of the series, airing on BBC One and BBC iPlayer starting in February.
In the upcoming season, Merrell is set to return to his character, Jack Rimmer, the headteacher who was featured from seasons 1-3 (aired between 2006 and 2008). After leaving to take on a head teacher position in Dubai, he will now reappear on our screens.
Jack’s story arcs on Waterloo Road encompassed him navigating the school through its toughest initial years, while also sharing a romantic entanglement with French teacher Steph Haydock (Denise Welch), engaging in conflicts with rebellious student Lewis Seddon (Craig Fitzpatrick), and embracing the beloved character Izzie Redpath (Jill Halfpenny) as she succumbed to injuries from an accidental stabbing.
In the upcoming installments, the actor reappears on the series, now residing in Manchester again, no longer employed within the educational sector, but instead serving as a counselor.
In a fresh video broadcasted by BBC, we see the newly appointed principal, Dame Stella Drake (played by Lindsey Coulson), turning to Jack for assistance due to the weighty responsibilities of managing the academy that she finds challenging.
Upon his return, Merrell expressed: “I parted ways with the initial phase of Waterloo Road’s ‘OG’ series in 2006, cherishing the memories of crafting a character amidst an exceptional cast and contributing to a significant narrative.
Seeing fresh enthusiasm from a new group, who didn’t exist when we first created it, filled me with optimism and a bit of shock.
He went on to say, “Playing Jack Rimmer over all those years on TV was one of my favorite characters to portray, and returning to bring his latest story to life after all these years has been a real joy.
Although it’s a new location, the same values, drama, humor, and honesty remain, making it feel like returning to familiar grounds.
Cameron Roach, the creator of Rope Ladder Fiction and executive producer of Waterloo Road, commented: “Ever since we considered bringing back Jack Rimmer through Jason, our writers have been thrilled about the prospect. Seeing this come to life has been incredibly exciting.
Fans of the original series are sure to be thrilled by Jack’s comeback, as this revival offers fresh, intriguing plot twists that both long-time fans and newcomers can appreciate. Both cast and crew have relished Jason’s return to the set, and we believe viewers will feel the same way.
Since its comeback on the BBC, Merrell won’t be the initial actor to take up his original character again.
Previously seen characters like Chlo Charles portrayed by Katie Griffiths, Janeece Bryant acted by Chelsee Healey, Andrew Treneman played by Jamie Glover, Mika Grainger embodied by Lauren Drummond, Kim Campbell portrayed by Angela Griffin, and Donte Charles enacted by Adam Thomas have made appearances.
