As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I’ve seen games come and go, some sooner than later. The announcement of Monolith’s Wonder Woman back at The Game Awards 2021 was undoubtedly exciting, but three years later, it feels like we’re still in the early stages of the game’s development.
At The Game Awards, developers and publishers often make significant announcements, creating quite a buzz. However, viewers should be aware that there can be a considerable gap between an announcement and the game’s eventual release. Monolith’s Wonder Woman is a case in point, having been announced at The Game Awards 2021, but since then, no further updates have emerged. This prolonged silence is typically due to the fact that the game was just beginning development when it was first announced, much like Star Wars: Eclipse.
During an interview on the Kinda Funny Games podcast, Jason Schreier from Bloomberg talked about The Game Awards and how developers are revealing their games early in development. He used ‘Wonder Woman’ and ‘Star Wars: Eclipse’ as examples. Essentially, AAA games require a lot of time to create, and these studios are choosing to announce them early to generate excitement rather than later on. This isn’t shocking news given that neither ‘Wonder Woman’ nor ‘Star Wars: Eclipse’ had any gameplay footage in their trailers. However, it might be disheartening for fans expecting a release soon.
Looking back, one of the significant announcements a few years ago that left a lasting impact on me was “Star Wars: Eclipse”. Similarly, the announcement of “Wonder Woman” also came a few years ago. At the time of these announcements, it felt like we were holding nothing more than a piece of paper in our hands. There have been numerous instances where an exciting, big teaser trailer announcement would be made, only for us to wait a significantly long period before actually seeing the project come to fruition.
After three years since the announcement of the Wonder Woman game, there’s a chance we might hear updates about it in 2025. While it’s likely that we’re still far from its release, if Monolith has been steadily working on development, we could be treated to some actual gameplay footage. Interestingly, the developer’s website was recently updated, showcasing Wonder Woman prominently and offering visitors a chance to rewatch the 2021 teaser trailer. This update might hint that Monolith is preparing for something significant, but we’ll have to wait and see when we’ll get another sneak peek at the game.
One of the few details that we know about the Wonder Woman game right now is that it will feature the Nemesis system introduced in The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of Mordor. That would seem like a pretty good fit for a game about a superhero, and it will be interesting to see how it works in practice. Wonder Woman is one of the biggest characters of the DC Universe, and it would be nice to see if Monolith can do the character justice.
