Seinen Classic Outsells Berserk & Vagabond (But You Still Can’t Get It Here)

As a seasoned manga enthusiast who’s seen it all, from Berserk to Vagabond, I can confidently say that Kingdom stands shoulder-to-shoulder with these legendary series. Its intricate art style, gripping storyline, and deep character development have captured my heart and left me craving for more.

The critically acclaimed manga “Kingdom,” published by Shueisha, is one of the top-tier Seinen series ever created. This manga first appeared in 2006 and has surpassed 110 million copies in distribution, a feat achieved by only 23 other mangas in history. The captivating storyline of “Kingdom” revolves around character development, strategic military maneuvers, and exhilarating battles. Despite the widespread popularity of Seinen series like “Berserk” and “Vagabond,” “Kingdom” has yet to secure a global serialization after many years. According to Oricon News, this impressive milestone was reached with the release of its 74th volume.

The manga can only be legally obtained in Japan, and given its numerous volumes, the process of obtaining licensing and translation rights will take some time. Although there’s an anime version, the first two seasons have subpar and inconsistent animation that is hard to watch. However, Season 3 shows improvement, it may not compare to the mastery found in Hara’s artwork. Yasuhiro Hara’s artistic style is detailed with a hint of realism, effectively conveying the harshness of the world he has crafted.

Is Kingdom’s Anime Worth Watching?

Despite the lack of an official translation for the manga, the anime boasts five seasons thus far. Notably, Season 3 saw a significant improvement in animation following Studio Pierrot’s collaboration with Studio Signpost. The fifth season encompasses the Kokuyou Campaign Arc, which is the 16th story arc in the original manga. Given that the manga is currently on its 28th arc, it’s expected that there will be more anime seasons to come in the future.

What is the Plot of Kingdom?

The story takes place amidst China’s tumultuous warring periods. It focuses on a young orphan named Shin, who spends most of his time honing his swordsmanship skills with his sibling, Hyou. However, when misfortune befalls him, he gets entangled in palace affairs. He encounters Sei, the true king, who was forced to flee the palace by his stepbrother. Initially, their relationship is strained, but Shin chooses to safeguard Sei due to his bond with Hyou.

Shin and Sei share a common goal – Shin aspires to become a renowned general, while Sei aims to unify all the warring kingdoms under the State of Qin. With this objective in mind, they embark on their adventure, which promises challenges and violence. Climbing the ranks from an orphan to a general is considered virtually impossible, but Shin’s transformation from a young lad into a seasoned commander is nothing short of extraordinary.
