As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I can confidently say that Call of Duty: Black Ops 6’s Zombies mode has been a humbling experience for me. Despite being a fan of PvE content and having played countless hours of CoD in the past, I’ve always bypassed Zombies in favor of multiplayer.
Ever since Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 debuted in late October, I’ve clocked an impressive 235 hours (and still going) – the majority of which has been devoted to multiplayer. After completing the campaign and dabbling a bit with Warzone, I hadn’t given Zombies a single play until recently.
Over countless hours spent playing Call of Duty throughout the years, it’s astonishing that I’ve rarely delved into PvP content, as I usually prefer PvE. However, after hearing my friends and YouTubers praise Zombies in Black Ops 6, I gave it a shot this week. To my surprise, I found myself finding the game quite challenging!
In Directed Mode, despite being a beginner and unfamiliar with the game mechanics or strategies for Zombies in general, I consistently encountered failures. However, after examining my collected Gobblegums, some of them unexpectedly transformed into cheat codes that significantly sped up my progress through the Liberty Falls main quest. If you’re finding it tough like me, here’s a trick I used to make the gameplay more manageable for myself.
Directed Mode is the best place to start
For beginners such as ourselves with Zombies, I wholeheartedly suggest making use of the Directed Mode. At present, it can be found on Liberty Falls and Terminus, but trust me, it’ll be incredibly beneficial for you. Citadelle des Morts will acquire Directed Mode at a future time.
For one, it’ll guide you through the main quest on each map, and if you’re an achievement hunter, you can still unlock main quest-associated ones. You can’t do side quest easter eggs in Directed Mode, but for completing the story aspect, it’s an easier way to get through it and get a feel for the maps. You’ll also be capped at round 15, so things won’t get too crazy.
Initially, I found Black Ops 6 Zombies challenging if you’re new to it, as it took me quite some time to familiarize myself with the map layout and mechanics. Even after feeling more comfortable, I struggled to advance. However, once I examined my collection of Gobblegum, everything shifted dramatically in the game.
If you have these Gobblegums, use them, you’ll thank me later
Each Gobblegum offers a distinct power, and though you won’t find an endless stash of them, some can significantly simplify gameplay for novice players aiming to complete the main missions quickly.
In my approach, the two primary ones I utilized were exceptionally rare (the red ones). Employing them together, however, transformed persistent failures into instant victories.
The image shown is of an item called Perkaholic. Using this item will instantly activate all the available perks for you. This implies that you’ll gain immediate strength, and moreover, you won’t need to invest your Essence in activating these perks at the vending machines scattered across the map.
In another scenario, I employed the Ultra Gobblegum called “Secret Boost.” This enhancement elevates the item you’re currently wielding to legendary status, boosting its power output. Paired with Pack-a-Punch (available at the Church in Liberty Falls and the Inclined Lift in Terminus), there’s hardly anything in Challenge Mode that will prove difficult. Not even those recurring Manglers starting from round 11.
Looking back, I might not have needed Perkaholic in the first place, but it did simplify things for me, so rest assured, if all you have is Hidden Power, there’s nothing to fret about. You can always acquire other perks throughout the game, regardless.
An alternative suggestion I’d offer for a smoother experience could be Wall Power Gobblegum. This item ensures that the next wall-purchased weapon you buy is already upgraded with Pack-A-Punch. In simpler terms, it means you’ll have an additional reliable weapon to complement your primary one when used effectively.
Regarding firearms, I activated the Hidden Power on the XM4. Admittedly, it might sound dull, but there’s a method behind the madness. It’s user-friendly, comes with an extension for 100 bullets (but you need to upgrade the weapon initially to access this), and once you apply Pack-A-Punch, it boosts to a massive 200 rounds.
For someone learning the ropes of dealing with zombies and finding themselves in tricky situations due to advancing mobs, having an escape plan like the “get out of jail free card” you always carry is beneficial. Unlike your Field Upgrade, this item is always at your disposal. A Legendary, Pack-A-Punched XM4 can easily mow down numerous enemies with its 200 rounds, making the process effortless.
In my initial triumphant run, I combined a high-powered SMG imbued with Wall Power (a blue rarity) and annihilated everything in sight. To put it simply, that’s the gist of it. If you possess these Gobblegums, chances are you only have one or two, but if you’ve been struggling, as I was, use them. I’m certain you’ll achieve the same level of success I did!
