As a seasoned gamer and comic book enthusiast with over three decades of collecting under my belt, I can’t help but feel exhilarated by the announcement of “Godzilla vs. Marvel.” Growing up, I remember the thrill of watching the original Godzilla movies and pouring over each issue of the 1970s Godzilla comic books. To now see these two iconic franchises collide in a crossover event is nothing short of a dream come true for this old school fan.
In this upcoming crossover event, titled “Godzilla vs. Marvel“, Godzilla will clash with Marvel’s superheroes. This series of one-shots begins in March, starting with “Godzilla vs. Fantastic Four” written by the current writer of Fantastic Four, Ryan North, and illustrated by John Romita Jr. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, this six-issue series unfolds across different time periods, offering a fresh take on typical franchise crossovers. It’s worth noting that the last time Godzilla was featured in a Marvel comic was approximately 50 years ago during the run of the “Godzilla, King of the Monsters” series from 1977-1979.
In the upcoming movie titled “Godzilla vs. Fantastic Four“, legendary foe of Godzilla, King Ghidorah, is granted cosmic power and serves as a herald for Galactus, the world devourer. To protect Earth, Godzilla aligns with the Silver Surfer. Interestingly, Marvel’s First Family, including the Silver Surfer and Galactus, will make an appearance in next year’s “The Fantastic Four: First Steps“, marking the debut of the Fantastic Four within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
In an interview, Marvel Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski expressed that their initial contact was about reprints, but as time passed and discussions ensued, it became apparent that both teams were eager to work on something bigger together. Collaborative ideas began to materialize during this period, in close partnership with Toho. They found the ideal moment for these projects to unfold was for Godzilla’s 70th anniversary next year. Cebulski stated they have enjoyed collaborating and are hopeful that this marks the beginning of even more exhilarating projects together.
Dan Buckley, President of Marvel Comics & Franchises, mentioned that kaiju, particularly Godzilla, hold significant roles in Marvel’s comic book history. With a strong desire to collaborate with their teams, he stated, “We’ve always appreciated Godzilla, but as Godzilla’s popularity has grown significantly over time, it’s become a reflection of our current cultural spirit. This makes it an excellent demonstration of the enjoyable experiences the comics world can offer. Our main priority is storytelling, but collaborations like this provide exciting chances for fun crossovers that fans won’t want to miss out on.
