What Are Monolithians In Stalker 2: Heart Of Chornobyl?

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I can confidently say that the Stalker series has always been a unique beast in the gaming world. It’s not often you find a game that throws invisible tentacle monsters at you within minutes of starting, but here we are. And while the Zone may be full of mutants, hostile humans, and rips, it’s the enigmatic Monolith that really leaves me scratching my head.

One thing you need to know about the Stalker series is just how much dangerous junk it throws at you, and Stalker 2: Heart Of Chornobyl is no different. Within minutes of the intro, you’re already attacked by invisible tentacle murderers and have little place to run. As you explore more of the ominously named Zone, you’ll discover how many hostile mutants, people, and rips, in reality, are just waiting for you.

Despite this, one of the enigmatic and potentially hazardous entities within the Zone is known as Monolith. It has been present since the inception of the series, maintaining an unsettling aura that justifies everyone’s apprehension. A thorough investigation of Monolith might provide a sense of readiness for those who dare to approach it.

Spoiler Warning!

Where Are The Origins Of Monolith?

What Are Monolithians In Stalker 2: Heart Of Chornobyl?

Initially, during the initial phase of Zone exploration, the individuals who later became the Monolith were indistinguishable from regular Stalkers. Yet, over time as they delved deeper into the Zone, their perspectives towards the region and its impact on the environment subtly molded their minds.

After understanding that the artifacts they uncovered possessed powers beyond comprehension, they began to suspect that the power within the Zone might be boundless, capable of performing miracles. Fueled by these growing convictions, this collective of like-minded individuals joined forces, driven by the rumor of a colossal Artifact at the heart of the Zone, which they called the Monolith. Their determination shifted towards protecting it.

Ever since the concept of the enigmatic Monolith emerged, my gaming circle has taken its name, dubbing ourselves the “Guardians of the Artifact.” We’ve become obsessed with shielding this mysterious entity, often referring to it as the Wish Granter. Our collective belief is that its power should never fall into the wrong hands.

From a certain standpoint, their devotion to this cause leans heavily towards fanatical zealotry, reaching an extreme where they may aggressively target any non-affiliated Stalkers. It’s troubling to note that the typical member of Monolith often begins as a regular Stalker who has undergone indoctrination through devices referred to as psychic emitters, which are prevalent within the Zone and have a history of altering minds.

Initially, it was believed that Monolith had sole control over their beliefs and mind manipulation. However, it turned out they were serving something greater – a powerful entity called C-Consciousness. This mysterious force emerged as a byproduct of intense research aimed at connecting human minds into a unified consciousness. The scientists conducting the experiments unwittingly laid the foundation for this entity, which began as a small collective mind.

The C-Consciousness carried on with its investigations, aiming to understand and eventually dominate the Zone. To achieve this goal, it constructed a Wish Granter as a means to lure Stalkers towards it, manipulating them into becoming its servants. As a result, it evolved into a powerful deterrent that kept other Stalkers from approaching the C-Consciousness. This is the origin of the Monolith faction and the one controlling the brainwashed members.

What Is Monolith’s Role In Stalker 2?

What Are Monolithians In Stalker 2: Heart Of Chornobyl?

In the original Stalker series, Monolith was the main adversarial group. Most other factions within the Zone regarded them with suspicion and fear, choosing to steer clear of them whenever possible. However, as many Stalkers venture into the Zone in search of valuable Artifacts, they inevitably cross paths with Monolith, often finding themselves targeted or recruited by force.

It seems that there’s some ambiguity about the duration between Stalker: Call Of Pripyat and Stalker 2, but it appears that the Monolith faction has experienced a significant split. An early interaction with a character called the Ninth offers some insight into their current situation. He seems coherent enough to share that he no longer experiences or perceives a psychic bond with the Monolith, and many of his allies feel the same. This division might be a result of one of the endings in the previous game, where the protagonist challenges the C-Consciousness and manages to halt their activities.

What Are Monolithians In Stalker 2: Heart Of Chornobyl?

After the Monolith disbanded, many of its members found themselves adrift without leadership or structure until a few of them banded together to form a new group called Noon (Noontide). Their philosophy is rooted in their experience of overcoming or escaping Monolith’s mind control, and they aim to assist other Stalkers in achieving the same freedom. Yet, despite maintaining a generally neutral stance and being less prone to immediate aggression, they are still viewed with suspicion by most other factions.

Despite this drastic change, the original Monolith still operates within the center of Chornobyl, specifically around its Nuclear Power Plant. Their psychic emitters are still functional, so brainwashing is still a very real threat (Stalkers often refer to it as “being turned into zombies”) and is still extremely hostile to anyone who isn’t a Monolith member.
