Jujutsu Kaisen’s Best Part Might Not Even Be Canon

As a seasoned gamer with countless hours spent immersed in various anime worlds, I can confidently say that the “Juju Stroll” segments of Jujutsu Kaisen have become one of my favorite aspects of this phenomenal series. These whimsical sketches are a delightful contrast to the often brutal and dark storyline, offering a unique insight into the lives of our beloved characters when they’re not busy battling curses.

Anticipation for the third season of “Jujutsu Kaisen” builds as fans delve into past episodes (including “Jujutsu Kaisen 0”), reread the manga by Gege Akutami, or catch up for the first time. What makes “Jujutsu Kaisen” special is its richly developed characters, breathtaking action sequences, haunting soundtracks, and chilling horror elements. However, what might be its most endearing quality, and possibly non-canon, is also its silliest aspect.

Jujutsu Kaisen revolves around Yuji Itadori, a character who unintentionally consumes Sukuna’s Finger, a cursed object. As a result, he is given the death sentence by the authorities at Jujutsu High due to the immense power of the evil spirit it contains. However, his strength allows him to control this spirit, earning him a temporary reprieve. Together with his classmates Megumi Fushiguro, Nobara Kugisaki, and their charismatic senior Satoru Gojo, Itadori embarks on a mission to locate and eliminate the remaining fingers of Sukuna in order to vanquish this evil entity forever. The manga and anime are notoriously violent, and in Season 2, no character is immune from danger. Consequently, the amusing “Juju Stroll” scenes that play during the credits stand out all the more.

Why Juju Stroll Is So Important to Jujutsu Kaisen

In Season 1, every episode concluded with a brief, animated sequence called “Juju Stroll”. These lighthearted sketches, shown after the credits, often featured Sukuna relaxing in a hot spring and led into various whimsical scenes. The content of these scenes varied greatly, from cursed spirits playing soccer to lessons on how to construct a coat rack using a human skeleton, or even dumpling recipes. Despite having no direct impact on the main storyline, “Juju Stroll” segments serve to strengthen the bonds between the students at Jujutsu High, expand the show’s world-building elements, and provide greater insight into the characters we both admire and despise.

Due to constant fights aimed at warding off curses, you seldom witness Itadori, Megumi, and Kugisaki during their ordinary school days. Their bond deepens through battles. However, when the fighting ceases, they revert to civilian life. A standout scene from “Juju Strolls” portrays Megumi being pursued by a woman, which in turn makes Itadori, Kugisaki, and Gojo dash towards him in an amusing effort to save face for their friend. Simultaneously, Gojo demonstrates his own dance moves. The scene may seem silly, but it adds depth to their screen dynamics.

In Episode 13, titled “Tomorrow,” the most poignant moment occurs when the “Juju Stroll” takes place. While Itadori is training with Gojo, his friends remain oblivious to his survival. As Megumi, Kugisaki, Maki, Toge, and Panda share a bowl of Itadori’s beloved dumplings, Megumi shares the recipe with them. Kugisaki then declares these dumplings as “Itadori’s legacy.” Although the viewers are aware that Itadori is alive, this scene emphasizes the sorrow his friends feel and further complicates Gojo’s moral ambiguity as we approach Season 2.

Is Juju Stroll Canon?

Amongst fans of “Jujutsu Kaisen”, there’s much debate about the role of “Juju Stroll” within the broader storyline. In Gege Akutami’s manga, these segments aren’t formally named as “Juju Stroll,” but rather were created for the anime adaptation. Each chapter would conclude with a brief, everyday-life style segment, similar to how it was portrayed in the anime. These short interludes served much like a break between the grim and grotesque scenes that preceded them.

Some people contend that the everyday-style episodes don’t fit into the broader collection of canonical works. Fans might also argue that since the titles and stories deviate from those found in the manga, this serves as another reason to exclude them from the canon. Furthermore, even though Jujutsu Kaisen is full of humorous moments, it can be challenging to feel fear towards a villain when we’ve just witnessed his head being used as a ball during an unexpected game of beach soccer.

As a devoted fan, I must say that while the Juju Stroll stories may have a different feel compared to the manga’s chapter conclusions, they are undeniably born from the creative mind of Gege Akutami. This extraordinary manga artist breathed life into fresh storylines for the post-credit scenes in MAPPA’s anime adaptation. These were then skillfully woven into what we now know as the “Juju Stroll” segment.

Fans are eagerly anticipating when Season 3 will come out, as MAPPA has officially announced it. The gruesome “Culling Game” arc from the manga is set to be featured in this new season. We should hear more details at Jump Festa, happening on December 21st and 22nd this year.
