As a dedicated gamer with a soft spot for co-op adventures, I am absolutely thrilled about Hazelight Studios’ upcoming release, Split Fiction. Having been captivated by their previous masterpieces like Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, A Way Out, and It Takes Two, I can confidently say that they have a knack for weaving compelling stories while emphasizing cooperative gameplay in the most innovative ways. The fact that this new project is inspired by the founder’s own daughters adds an extra layer of heart to it.
Hazelight Studios invites gamers and family members alike for a reunion, unveiling their upcoming multiplayer venture – Split Fiction. This tale revolves around two ambitious writing siblings, Mio and Zoe, who find themselves unwittingly intertwined in each other’s stories. In an unexpected twist, they are intentionally thrust into a science fiction and fantasy realm teeming with possibilities (and levitating pigs). The sisters must collaborate to escape their books and thwart the publishing house from claiming their unique narratives as their own. Split Fiction is slated for release on consoles and PC on March 6, 2025.
The studio teased the game in October, hinting at the new IP’s co-op gameplay and character names, with its founder, Josef Fares, chiming in with the words “S*** ******N”. This past weekend, Hazelight Studios’ founder gave a tour of the Swedish-based studio and provided an inside scoop on what’s next. During the tour, Fares dropped by the motion capture studio with actors, Kaja Chan and Elsie Bennett, in rehearsal. Fares cited that the names are based on his daughters Mio and Zoe.
In 2014, the gaming studio Hazelight Studios was established by creative powerhouse Josef Fares, who had gained acclaim for his work on the 2013 game “Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons.” With a commitment to creating cooperative multiplayer games, the company unveiled “A Way Out” in 2018 – a split-screen action-adventure game where two prisoners collaborate to break out of prison. The announcement of this title took place at The Game Awards 2017, during an impassioned speech that criticized the microtransactions in “Star Wars Battlefront II” and the Academy’s view on video games. In a daring move, Fares declared his disdain for the Oscars, a statement that catapulted him into mainstream media and allowed him to promote his innovative gaming creations further.
A Way Out” garnered widespread acclaim from both critics and gamers, who admired its heartfelt brotherhood narrative and groundbreaking co-op split-screen gameplay presentation. The game achieved a milestone of selling 1 million copies in just two weeks following its release, and it was also recognized with a nomination for Best Game Direction at the 2018 Game Awards.
As a dedicated fan, I’ve been thrilled to see Hazelight Studios build on their triumphs with the release of the captivating co-op action-adventure game, “It Takes Two.” This heartwarming tale follows a couple on the verge of divorce who are magically transformed into dolls made by their daughter. To escape this enchantment and save their relationship, they must collaborate to find a way out, making for a compelling journey filled with emotional depth.
