As a gamer who grew up watching Dexter Morgan dissect crime scenes and indulge his Dark Passenger, I can’t help but feel elated about the latest development in the saga of everyone’s favorite serial killer. The revival of Dexter through Dexter: Original Sin has sent shockwaves through the television landscape, and I find myself once again drawn into the mesmerizing world of Iron Lake and its residents.

Dexter: Original Sin has brought back to life Dexter Morgan after his death at the end of New Blood. Even though it was released 18 years ago, Dexter remains one of the most widely watched TV shows. In its heyday on Showtime in the late 2000s and early 2010s, the show played a significant role in shaping the cable channel. More recently, the show gained renewed popularity when it was added back to Netflix during the summer, giving the Dark Passenger a new audience. As a generation too young to have originally watched the show grew interested in it, particularly those who came of age in the era of superhero media, Dexter’s name began trending on social media.

The TV series “Dexter” ended in 2013, hinting at a possible future comeback. True to form, this came about in 2021 with “Dexter: New Blood,” a 10-episode miniseries designed to provide a conclusive ending for the character. In the final episode of the show, Dexter Morgan was fatally shot by his son. Michael C. Hall’s character Dexter Morgan will come back to life in a forthcoming series titled “Dexter: Resurrection“, but this show won’t debut until June 2025. In the interim, fans must hold on to their excitement with a prequel series called “Dexter: Original Sin“. This new show plans to shed light on Dexter’s early years and it’s doing so in quite an intriguing manner. Michael C. Hall narrates the entire series as his character, reminiscing about his past. The premiere of “Original Sin” aired tonight on Paramount+ and it begins by addressing the question that every fan is wondering: How has Dexter managed to survive?

In the opening scene of Original Sin, we find Dexter, who appears to be his ex-girlfriend Angela, a police officer, rushing him to the emergency room after he’s been shot in the chest, close to his heart. The medical team frantically work to stop the bleeding and establish that he has no heartbeat. They then try to revive him using a defibrillator, with Dexter’s pulse eventually returning after a few attempts. His inner monologue humorously comments on his resurrection, but he remains unconscious, possibly in a temporary coma. Essentially, Dexter was brought back to life by the defibrillator.

In the upcoming series “Original Sin” or “Resurrection,” there might be further explanations regarding the situation. Michael C. Hall earlier suggested to Variety that the chilly climate in Iron Lake contributed to The Bay Harbor Butcher’s survival. It’s plausible that the cold weather and snow hindered his bleeding, giving Dexter a chance to recover with medical assistance. However, where this leaves him moving forward remains uncertain.

In the finale of “New Blood”, Dexter’s identity as a serial killer was exposed globally, prompting Angel Bautista’s journey from Miami to confront him. Authorities were ready to transport Dexter back to his home state. It’s uncertain if Dexter will find a way to break free from the hospital upon waking. He may well be restrained in his hospital bed and forced to acknowledge his actions, potentially interacting with new characters played by Peter Dinklage and Gillian Anderson. However, it’s challenging to envision an entire series focused on Dexter being handcuffed or confined to a jail cell throughout, as it lacks the necessary tension. We can only wait and discover how things unfold!
