As a long-time fan of the Witcher series, I am beyond excited for The Witcher 4! The decision to feature Ciri as the new protagonist is a bold move, and I can’t wait to see how her unique approach to being a Witcher unfolds. From what game director Sebastian Kalemba shared about her character, it seems that she will be less calculating and more emotionally driven, which promises an engaging and unpredictable journey.
At The Game Awards, it was recently revealed that The Witcher 4 will feature Ciri as the lead character, marking a shift in the series’ protagonist and setting the stage for a fresh trilogy. Unlike Geralt, she will craft her own Witcher rulebook.
During an interview with IGN, game director Sebastian Kalemba discussed how Ciri, still at the start of her career as a Witcher, will present herself differently as a main character compared to her mentor and adoptive father, Geralt of Rivia.
He expressed his affection by saying, ‘It’s her tenacity that draws me in.’ She’s so dedicated to living life fully, and there are times when instinct takes over logic. That’s what I admire about Ciri – she’s not as calculating, she follows her heart, her passions, her intuition.
He mentioned, “She’s on the verge of creating a distinct manual, in her own style.” Referring to how she tackles the challenges, whether it’s battling creatures or undertaking missions, each adventure is uniquely her own.
Kalemba continued, ‘We aim for players to have a chance to shape her character. She’s going to create her own rulebook in her own style. Her approach to battles, quests, and adventures will be distinctively hers.’
Similar to previous Witcher games, The Witcher 4’s protagonist will have a distinct personality but can be molded by players through their actions. The creators aim to give players more control over the game than ever before, focusing on putting player agency at the forefront.
In addition to the traditional choice-based narrative, Player autonomy in The Witcher 4 will extend to more gameplay versatility, as suggested by Kalemba.
He stated that we’re providing additional resources for players to manage. This isn’t just about playing and dealing with the narrative outcomes, but also enhancing the gameplay itself. Our goal is to offer players more chances to shape their own gaming experience.
The director further pointed out similarities with previous CDPR games and expressed that The Witcher 4 would offer a wider range of gameplay compared to its forerunner, providing a more immersive journey through the lives portrayed in Cyberpunk 2077.
Kalemba mentioned that the gameplay in Cyberpunk 2077 offered a greater degree of diversity compared to The Witcher 3, enabling players to craft more unique character builds and have personalized encounters. This flexibility is something they aim to incorporate in The Witcher 4, focusing on refining the gameplay mechanics while enhancing the world exploration experience as well.
In addition, Kalemba has verified that The Witcher 4 will continue the storyline consistent with all endings from The Witcher 3, but Geralt may not be the main character anymore, although he will still appear in the game.
The Witcher 4 entered full production earlier this year.
