Ryan Reynolds Explains Deadpool’s Relationship With Avengers, X-Men in the MCU

As a lifelong cinema enthusiast with a penchant for superhero films and a soft spot for the unconventional, I find myself deeply intrigued by Ryan Reynolds‘ vision for Deadpool’s future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Having witnessed his journey from the dismal depths of 2011’s Green Lantern to the triumphant success of Deadpool, I can’t help but marvel at his resilience and determination.

After the monumental $1.3 billion success of “Deadpool” and “Wolverine” at the box office, Ryan Reynolds has unveiled his distinctive ideas for Deadpool’s future within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He emphasized that the character should maintain his outsider status, even when interacting with the Avengers and X-Men. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Reynolds discussed why Deadpool thrives on the fringes of Marvel’s hero groups.

Ryan Reynolds stated, “Deadpool seems to fit perfectly with both the X-Men and Avengers, but he must remain an outsider. His deepest desire is to be acknowledged and valued, yet this can never happen. He uses humor as a defense mechanism to hide his many shortcomings. If, by some chance, Deadpool becomes an Avenger or X-Man, that marks the end of his journey.

According to discussions led by Marvel Studios head, Kevin Feige, these are the plans he has for the character’s future development.

At the Disney’s D23 Brazil event in November, Feige mentioned that the plans for Deadpool and Wolverine will consistently present a challenge – figuring out where they can be incorporated, and how swiftly this might happen.

Reynolds’ stance on Deadpool’s position within the MCU stems from deep character understanding developed over three films. The latest installment became the highest-grossing live-action film of 2024, featuring surprise appearances from Wesley Snipes, Jennifer Garner, Chris Evans, and Channing Tatum.

Achieving success represents an important step in Ryan Reynold’s experience with the character. Following the letdown from 2011’s Green Lantern, Reynolds seized control over Deadpool’s fate, playing a crucial role in turning a relatively small $68-million budget into an unprecedented R-rated superhero series.

As a passionate movie enthusiast, I shared with THR my thoughts on my choice to produce films: “Should fortune smile upon me and I emerge victorious, that’s wonderful. But even if things don’t go as planned and I face defeat, I can take solace in the fact that I’ve orchestrated my own journey – architect of my own rise and fall.

Moving forward, Reynolds proposes a possible change in the nature of Deadpool’s upcoming appearances, suggesting they may veer away from standalone exploits.

He shared that he’s come up with several suggestions and concepts, none of which primarily focus on Deadpool. Instead, he sees Deadpool as a fantastic secondary or ensemble character. He strongly believes in the chemistry between Deadpool and Wolverine and wants to find ways to bring them together. When Deadpool is the main character, it works best when everything is taken away from him and he’s pushed against a wall. However, doing that again for a fourth time feels repetitive and unoriginal. But this doesn’t mean eliminating the fun factor – there’s still an engaging and impactful arc for Deadpool to follow.

This strategy fits with Marvel’s larger vision for incorporating mutants within the MCU. As Feige mentioned, the X-Men are set to play a significant role in the franchise’s upcoming phases, especially after 2027’s “Avengers: Secret Wars”.

In a conversation with Omelete, Feige shared that while preparing for Avengers: Endgame in the past, our focus was on reaching the climax of our story, only to start from scratch afterwards. However, as we embark on Secret Wars, we have a clear understanding of where the story will go up until then and beyond. The X-Men play a significant role in that upcoming plotline.

Regarding possible roles in future Avengers movies, Reynolds stayed tight-lipped, sharing with Variety’s Awards Circuit Podcast, “I’m not deliberately vague. We’ll just have to wait and see what unfolds.
