A few days following the 26-year-old’s arrest in Pennsylvania for the Dec. 5 murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York City, his relatives released a heartfelt message to him.
David B. Irwin, representing the Mangiones, conveyed to TMZ that the family has made it clear they hold the Ivy League graduate in high regard and hope for his continued success.
Irwin also mentioned that the family is yet to uncover all the details about Mangione’s case and investigation, as they are mainly gathering information from news reports.
TopMob News has reached out to the family’s attorney for comment but has not heard back.
Four days after their long-awaited statement following Mangione’s arrest on December 9th in Altoona, Pennsylvania, I can hardly contain my excitement as they finally show a glimmer of support.
In their statement to NBC News, they mentioned that they can’t provide any comments about the news stories concerning Luigi Mangione. All they’re aware of is the information they’ve gathered from the media.
The Mangiones expressed their deep shock and sorrow upon learning about Luigi’s arrest. They extend their sympathies to the Thompson family and request that everyone offers prayers for all those affected by this situation.
After his apprehension, Mangione has been indicted for numerous offenses. It is in Pennsylvania where he was detained and reportedly offered false IDs to the authorities, that he faces felony charges of forgery and unlawful possession of a firearm without a permit, as well as three lesser charges, as per a criminal record obtained by NBC News.

She plans to sign a warrant, bringing Mangione, a man entangled in heinous allegations, back to our soil to answer for his crimes – murder, illegal weapon possession, and using a fake document, as per court documents I’ve glimpsed on NBC News.
Thomas Dickey, Mangione’s attorney, informed reporters on December 10th that there has been no proof presented to suggest that his client was the shooter. Moreover, he mentioned that Mangione plans to plead not guilty in both states. It’s important to remember this: A key principle of American justice is that a person is considered innocent until proven guilty beyond any reasonable doubt, and as of now, I have yet to see any evidence supporting the accusations against him.

Brian Thompson was the CEO of UnitedHealthcare. He first joined the company in 2004 and held several positions before taking on the role of CEO in 2021.
Prior to working at UnitedHealthcare, Thompson was employed at PwC, according to his LinkedIn profile. He also graduated with honors from the University of Iowa with a Bachelor’s degree in business administration as an accounting major in May 1997, the school’s public relations manager Steve Schmadeke told NBC News.
Thompson, who lived in Minnesota, was married to Paulette Thompson—though according to public records viewed by TopMob News, they had been living in separate homes—and was the father of two sons.
He was shot and killed in New York on Dec. 4, 2024. Thompson was 50 years old.
6:46 a.m. on Dec. 4, 2024 saw patrol officers from the NYPD’s Midtown North Precinct responding to a shooting incident outside the New York Hilton Midtown hotel. This was revealed by NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny during a press briefing later that morning.
As per Kenny’s account, the shooter made his way to the New York Hilton Midtown on foot, reaching the hotel five minutes before Thompson did. In a video, Kenny explained that Thompson was spotted walking alone towards the Hilton at 6:44 a.m., having left another nearby hotel for a UnitedHealth Group investors conference scheduled for 8 a.m. on that day.
During the press conference on December 6th, Kenny stated that the investigators have CCTV footage showing the gunman arriving at Port Authority in New York City on November 24th. He further explained that this bus is believed to have originated in Atlanta and had several stops along the way, so they are unsure where exactly he boarded the bus.
At a press conference on Dec. 4, Kenny described the suspect as a man with fair skin who wore a light-colored jacket, possibly brown or cream, a black face mask, black and white sneakers, and a distinctive gray backpack.
On December 9, the Altoona Police Department in Pennsylvania apprehended Luigi Mangione on gun-related charges. According to a criminal record acquired by NBC News, these charges include two felonies – one for forgery and one for unlicensed firearm possession – as well as three misdemeanors: tampering with records or identification, possessing tools used in a crime, and providing false identification to law enforcement.
Beyond acting suspiciously, Tisch mentioned, Mangione was found with several fake IDs, one of which was a U.S. passport. In the Dec. 9 briefing, she stated that officers discovered a firearm on him, along with a suppressor, both fitting the description of the weapon used in the murder. They also recovered clothing items, including a mask similar to those worn by our suspect. Furthermore, officers found a fake New Jersey ID matching the one the individual used at the New York hostel before the shooting. Tisch added that they also discovered a handwritten document indicating both his motives and mindset.
On December 9th, Manhattan’s district attorneys brought forth a murder accusation against Mangione, as confirmed by court documents obtained by NBC News. The individual, aged 26, is additionally charged with three weapons-related offenses: two counts of possessing a second-degree loaded firearm, and one count each for a third-degree firearm (such as a silencer). He also faces a charge for possessing a forged document. As of now, he has not pleaded to any charges.
As reported by NBC News, backed by the NYPD, Mangione was found with three pages of writings totaling fewer than 300 words at the time of his arrest. These writings were said to contain phrases like “Frankly these parasites had it coming,” according to senior law enforcement officials who spoke to the outlet.
On December 10, Mangione was present at a hearing held at the courthouse in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania. Upon his arrival, as reported by NBC News, he expressed his disapproval to families by saying, “It’s totally detached and an affront to the intelligence of the American people.
Mangione is a suspect in the murder of Brian Thompson and is facing several other charges in both Pennsylvania and New York, including forgery and criminal possession of a weapon.
He’s an Ivy League graduate, having received a Bachelor of Science in engineering in 2020 and a Masters of Science in engineering at the University of Pennsylvania, the school confirmed to NBC News.
NYPD Chief of Detectives Kenny shared additional details on Mangione’s upbringing, saying he was born and raised in Maryland. His most recent address is listed as Honolulu but he also has connections to San Francisco, Kenny told NBC News.
After Mangione’s arrest, his family released a statement on X.
“Unfortunately, we cannot comment on news reports regarding Luigi Mangione,” they said in the Dec. 9 post. “We only know what we have read in the media. Our family is shocked and devastated by Luigi’s arrest. We offer our prayers to the family of Brian Thompson and we ask people to pray for all involved. We are devastated by this news.”
After the news of Brian’s shooting, his family expressed their deep sorrow for his loss. In a statement obtained by NBC affiliate KARE in Minneapolis on Dec. 5, they shared, “We are devastated to learn about the senseless taking of our dear Brian. He was a loving, generous, and gifted man who lived life to the fullest, touching countless lives. Above all, he was an amazing father to our two sons and will be deeply missed. We appreciate your sympathy and ask for privacy as we navigate through this challenging time.
Regarding the demise of our esteemed colleague and friend, Thompson, UnitedHealth Group, the umbrella organization of UnitedHealthcare, has shown its sorrow and shock by lowering its flags to half-mast at its corporate headquarters in Minnesota.
