As a seasoned observer of the evolving landscape of the entertainment industry, I must say that the meteoric rise of webcomics, particularly those on platforms like Webtoon, is nothing short of a revolution. Having witnessed the humble beginnings of print comics and manga, I can attest to the transformative power this digital medium has brought about.
In Japan, starting January 11, 2025, ABC TV will premiere a fresh live-action series inspired by the popular webtoon “Love Revolution”. The cast includes Toa Shimasaki, member of the Japanese boy band Lil Kansai, which is produced by Tadayoshi Okura from SUPER EIGHT and Mizuki Yoshida known for her role as Kyomoto in the animated version of “Look Back”. This marks the second time this webcomic has been adapted into live-action, with the first series having debuted in South Korea back in 2020.
The comic titled “Love Revolution” was first released on Webtoon in 2013 by author and illustrator 232. This story centers around Gong Ju-young, a high school student, and his infatuation with the aloof Wang Ja-rim. Despite her apparent indifference, he persistently pursues her using extravagant and lively gestures of affection. Additionally, a cast of secondary characters play significant roles in nudging the couple closer together.
In the forthcoming Japanese adaptation, the principal characters have been renamed. Originally known as Rei Himenomiya, she now goes by Rin Oji. She finds herself drawn to her classmate, who is now named Rin, and they join forces with their fellow students in an attempt to win over Rin’s affections. The freshly released trailer is simply charming, offering a glimpse into Rei’s clever tactics as she tries to persuade Rin to reciprocate his feelings.
Web Comics Are Taking Over the Entertainment Industry & WEBTOON Proves It
Since webcomics gained mainstream recognition, it became evident that they would significantly influence the publishing world. Unlike traditional print comics, webcomics, particularly Webtoon series, can reach broader audiences due to their digital nature. Moreover, the episodic release format used by Webtoons gives creators more flexibility in producing their work, which can be demanding, considering most webcomics like manhwa are entirely rendered and colored with each new chapter publication. Today, this medium has grown exponentially and is expanding into various aspects of popular culture.
Many Webtoon series have gained enough popularity to be turned into live-action shows, such as the horror series “Sweet Home”, which was adapted into a three-season series on Netflix in 2020. “True Beauty” received not just a live-action drama, but also an animated version that streamed on Crunchyroll earlier in 2024 and was produced by Studio N and Cocktail Media. Other series that aren’t part of Webtoon have also become mainstream successes, with “Solo Leveling” becoming a breakout hit after the release of its anime adaptation’s first season. Although traditional comics and manga are still popular, it seems that the manhwa trend is here to stay – and that’s a positive development.
