Asmongold Slams Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet Protagonist as Wrong Choice

As a long-time follower of Asmongold, I must say his insights into the gaming industry are always insightful and thought-provoking. His latest analysis of Naughty Dog’s new IP, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, resonated with me as someone who has been around the block a few times in the gaming world.

As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve been excitedly following The Game Awards 2024, and boy, was I intrigued by Naughty Dog’s unveiling of a fresh IP titled Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. However, the response to this upcoming PS5 game has been less than optimistic so far. The reveal trailer, available on both PlayStation and Naughty Dog’s YouTube channels, is garnering more dislikes than likes, and the comments on the former are overwhelmingly negative. Interestingly, Naughty Dog seems to have anticipated this backlash and decided to disable the comment section on their own upload.

In his usual manner, well-known YouTuber and streamer Asmongold expressed his opinion on the ongoing controversy. His take seems to matter to many, as the video has been widely discussed since it was posted. Remarkably, it has garnered over 800,000 views in just under a day. So, what did Asmongold say? Mainly, he expressed disappointment with the character selection.

The video starts off with Asmongold expressing his thoughts, which are that the market for unconventional, masculine female leads in games might not be as vast as the gaming industry believes. He shared this perspective in a post on X, and now he’s reading it aloud.

In the video, Asmongold goes on to say: “Five or more years ago, the creation of this game likely began, and at that time, a character similar to this could have appeared more appealing.

The visuals for this game are exceptional, even if one might not be fond of the character or other aspects. There’s often art I don’t particularly enjoy, but can appreciate its quality. However, if you’re considering a space bounty game with an 80s retro aesthetic, focusing on bounty hunting, combat with laser swords, and shooting people, it’s likely catering to a predominantly male audience. In such a scenario, one could say the event is male-dominated, or in colloquial terms, it might feel like a “sausage fest.” Creating characters that may not align with the primary demographic of the genre could potentially lead to the game’s underperformance.

“You can criticize others for their misogyny, racism, bigotry, or unkind behavior as gamers, but trying to bully them into buying the game won’t work. This tactic has failed in the past with Concord and Veilguard, and it simply doesn’t work. In fact, Naughty Dog chose to turn off comments on their trailer release, which suggests they aren’t expecting a flood of positive feedback.

In the video you’re watching, Asmongold points out at the end that the performance metrics for the game’s unveiling trailer aren’t impressive.

The YouTuber expressed some shock, stating, “I was quite taken aback they held back the trailer until the end.” They needed to disable comments due to the overwhelming negativity. If you examine the dislike count, this game is receiving a lot of thumbs down. It’s clear that the audience didn’t respond favorably to this game, wouldn’t you agree? Regardless of personal opinions, the numbers don’t lie. That’s all there is to it.
