As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I have to admit that The Witcher 4 reveal at this year’s Game Awards left me both exhilarated and apprehensive. On one hand, it’s exciting to see our beloved universe expanding, but on the other, change can be a double-edged sword.
At The Game Awards 2024, CD Projekt Red unveiled The Witcher 4 as one of the highlights. However, the announcement has received mixed reactions, with some fans expressing dissatisfaction over the game’s protagonist, Ciri, taking over from Geralt of Rivia. Some are displeased with her character transformation, while others find her appearance in the game different from how she looked in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Additionally, there are concerns about potential plot inconsistencies and lore breaks due to Ciri being a Witcher herself.
The most noticeable change about Ciri — other than that she is now a Witcher — is her facial appearance. She looks different, which makes sense, to an extent. She’s older. She’s a Witcher now. And of course the last time we saw her was during the PS4 and Xbox One generation, in 2015. Technology has advanced since then, and what’s in vogue from a design perspective has also changed. Further, some of it can be chalked up to the fact it is a cinematic trailer. Characters, including Geralt, look quite different in the reveal cinematic for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt compared to how they look in the actual game.
After considering all of this, enthusiasts of the Witcher series on Reddit have pointed out another alteration in the character’s portrayal. This adjustment is relatively minor, but it’s one that fans have responded favorably to.
In the game The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Ciri is often seen wearing high-heeled boots. Some players found this an unusual decision due to practicality concerns, especially considering sorceresses like Yennefer and Triss also wore heels. However, many fans didn’t find it fitting for Ciri. Now that she has become a Witcher, the choice seems even less suitable. True to form, the game developers have now swapped her high-heeled boots for traditional Witcher footwear.
As an unapologetic opponent of nerfing ‘traditionally attractive’ designs, I’m very happy about this change. Uncle Vesemir would never have let Ciri wear high heels on the Path, nor would she want to.

In a possible departure from the initial design, Ciri in The Witcher 4 might sport boots with heels in the final version. However, it appears that fans are anticipating something different based on the popularity of this topic on The Witcher Reddit page this week and the consensus among comments aligning with these expectations.
