As a die-hard comic book enthusiast who’s been following the Spider-Man saga since the days of Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, I must say that the latest interpretation of Rhino in Kraven the Hunter left me scratching my head more often than it entertained me.
I’ve been a loyal supporter of Sony’s Spider-Man spinoff movies, but even I can’t ignore the criticisms from Marvel fans. These movies have faced criticism not only for their scripts and adaptations, but also for their special effects and CGI. Unsurprisingly, the latest release, Kraven the Hunter, has followed suit. Despite a struggling box office, some dedicated fans have ventured out to catch what may be the final spin-off movie from Sony’s Spider-Man Universe. The character that’s been under fire after the film’s release is Rhino – opinions seem divided about his design, but overall, fans aren’t pleased with him.
User @k38473140 expressed dissatisfaction with the game design, stating they believed it could have been improved by simply copying and slightly modifying the design of Rhino from the Spider-Man video games. Another user, @Goofyfan_Chuck, went a step further, likening the appearance to a gooey Power Rangers villain. They expressed frustration with the makeup design, suggesting that Sony should consider transferring the Spider-Man film rights to Marvel Studios.
It seems that people have always found it amusing that the Rhino, despite being portrayed as a man in a rhino costume on paper, has never truly been brought to life convincingly in live-action films. As @TheMcrees puts it humorously, “It’s just funny how Rhino is essentially a guy in a rhino suit, but Hollywood can’t seem to make him look good!
It’s worth mentioning that Rhino, the Marvel baddie, has graced the big screen before, with Paul Giamatti donning the role in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. In the Marvel comic books, Rhino was initially a mafia thug who underwent a super soldier transformation, giving him extraordinary strength and toughness. Although some versions portray him as a man-rhino hybrid, he is generally recognized for simply wearing a rhino-themed costume. Giamatti’s portrayal in 2014, however, presented Rhino in a giant robotic tank-like suit, which was quite a change for comic book aficionados.
In a slightly altered version, the antagonist, Kraven the Hunter, made an appearance with a revised likeness, albeit somewhat reminiscent of his original form. Instead of being clad in mechanical armor, he now sported resilient, scaly skin. Many fans appear to favor this new portrayal without a doubt. As for Rhino, @AarontheWise commented that his mutated appearance is more appealing than the tank-like version at the end of The Amazing SpiderMan 2. Some also found themselves offering cautious compliments, with @tylerduran21 writing, “It seems I’m one of the few who think it doesn’t look too terrible.
A different perspective is equally important in this discussion – the tone of the movie, specifically. The film “Kraven the Hunter” was marketed as a violent project, earning an R rating. Some viewers considered this when they criticized the character design, arguing it contradicts the expected violence level. Given the anticipated darker tone, many also predicted that Rhino would be larger and more intimidating. In light of this, @mgItsMclovin tweeted: “It would’ve looked much better if they had scaled him to the size he is supposed to be.
Regardless of Sony’s efforts to align Rhino with his comic book persona and harmonize him visually with Kraven the Hunter, the task remains challenging due to the need for realism in appearance. On one side, the visual effects in the Spider-Man spinoff films have historically been weak; yet it’s also important to note that Marvel fans can be quite discerning.
Kraven the Hunter is now in theaters.
