Ryan Reynolds Reveals Disney Character He Wasn’t Allowed to Use in Deadpool 3

As a die-hard Marvel fan with a soft spot for Ryan Reynolds‘ hilarious antics, I must say that the making of Deadpool & Wolverine was nothing short of a rollercoaster ride. From the get-go, it seemed like Reynolds was channeling his inner Deadpool, throwing out jokes left and right and pushing boundaries that even Disney, the house of Mouse, found hard to swallow.

Ryan Reynolds, who plays Deadpool, is famous for embodying his character’s humorous and sarcastic traits, but occasionally veers off course. With a knack for humor that extends beyond the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Reynolds often incorporates jabs at Disney, being the parent company of Marvel Studios, into Deadpool and Wolverine’s dialogues. The charm of Deadpool lies in his constant joke-cracking and breaking the fourth wall, commenting on aspects of his own movie as if he were aware of his presence within it. When penning the script, Reynolds capitalized on this trait to craft some of the funniest jokes possible. However, attempting to integrate the classic Bambi narrative into a superhero film wasn’t one of his wisest decisions, necessitating an intervention from Kevin Feige to eliminate that line.

During an interview on Variety’s Actors on Actors series, Reynolds confided in Andrew Garfield about an incident. He revealed that Feige had consistently been supportive of the project, but when he proposed a Deadpool & Wolverine story reminiscent of the 1950 film Rashomon, which presents events from multiple perspectives, and it was turned down, he opted to suggest absurd ideas instead. One of these outlandish concepts spawned a Bambi reference. “Then I proposed a two-person tale featuring me and the hunter who shot Bambi’s mother,” he disclosed. “Their response was ‘We don’t touch Bambi, Ryan’.

Interestingly or not, it so happened that by 2020, Bambi had been officially announced as one of Disney’s upcoming live-action adaptations. This fact supported Feige’s choice to abandon the project. The idea itself stirred up controversy, especially concerning the hunter character, given the target audience is still children. Even before screenwriter Lindsey Anderson Beer departed from the film, she had been working on a reimagining of the story for a more contemporary audience. This included softening the impact of Bambi’s mother’s untimely demise to prevent distressing viewers.

Besides this, during numerous interviews with Ryan Reynolds and Shawn Levy, they frequently brought up a humorous anecdote about a particular line in the script that was ultimately removed. Both joked that they would keep this line secret until their last breath. Interestingly, Mickey Mouse was part of the storyline, but in a manner that required censorship to avoid potential misinterpretation. Ryan Reynolds vowed not to reveal the line, but with Disney’s FYC portal releasing the Deadpool & Wolverine script online, people were able to discover what it entailed at last.

Prior to the film’s title being decided, it was uncertain how much the budget would be, leaving the plot details unclear. During this time, Reynolds and Levy brainstormed numerous ideas, frequently adjusting them based on potential costs. The idea of including multiple characters wasn’t initially considered, indicating that they were initially adapting to the available options as they emerged. It was later in this process that Mephisto became a potential major antagonist for the storyline.

Ultimately, the film maintained its edgy and unconventional nature, despite incorporating some novel concepts yet to be revealed. It shattered box office records, garnered a 94% audience approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and remarkably put *NSYNC on the Billboard charts. One of its notable aspects was its candid appraisal of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s ongoing projects, which surprisingly gained Feige’s endorsement. Yet, what truly resonated with fans was the unique twist it introduced, and that is what truly counts.
