As a seasoned film critic with decades of observing and analyzing the cinematic world under my belt, I must say that Keanu Reeves’ decision to step back from the John Wick franchise due to his knees is both understandable and heartbreaking. The action-packed saga has been a refreshing breath of fresh air in the genre, with Reeves’ portrayal of the grizzled yet unyielding John Wick leaving an indelible mark on audiences worldwide.
Keanu Reeves, who recently turned 60, has expressed a pragmatic reason for not continuing with the John Wick franchise in the future. In an interview on CBS This Morning, he shared that while he’d love to reprise his role as John Wick, the intense physical demands of the action series are becoming too taxing on his body, particularly his knees.
As a die-hard fan, I’d put it this way: “I’ve got to admit, my joints are giving me a hard time about another ‘John Wick’ right now. My heart is up for it, but I’m unsure if my knees can keep up. This was during a chat with Jeff Fowler, the director of ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’, promoting its release next Friday. In jest, he mentioned that my physical presence wouldn’t be necessary for future Sonic films since it only requires voice-over work to play Shadow the Hedgehog. He jokingly predicted: “Mark my words: Keanu will be voicing Shadow for the next two decades.
In 2014, Keanu Reeves regained some momentum in his career as an action movie star with the release of John Wick, a film that has since spawned a continuing series. In this story, he portrays a retired assassin grappling with sorrow who is drawn back into a captivating realm of business-like violence. Throughout the narrative, viewers discover the immense legendary status of this seemingly ordinary hitman. Reeves revisited this character in three additional films, with the latest – John Wick: Chapter 4 – premiering in 2023.
Previously, a TV series titled “The Continental: In the Universe of John Wick” made its debut last year. Marketed as a miniseries, it hasn’t shown any signs of deviating from that format thus far. However, the first spinoff film is slated for release next year. The movie “John Wick: Ballerina” will be in theaters on June 6, 2024.
Despite the ongoing plans for John Wick: Chapter 5, the franchise might face challenges maintaining its momentum without Keanu Reeves’ iconic character. If his retirement is indeed permanent, this raises some concerns about other projects we’ve previously heard about. The fifth installment of the series has been in development since at least 2020, initially intended to be filmed simultaneously with Chapter 4. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and 2023 Hollywood labor strikes, the movie seems to have experienced significant alterations. In October, director Chad Stahelski shared with The Hollywood Reporter that Chapter 5 would introduce a new narrative thread instead of continuing directly from Chapter 4. Additionally, it was mentioned that Reeves would play a role in shaping the story’s direction.
Not less than two additional films in the John Wick series are currently being produced, and one more TV show as well. At present, you can watch the initial three John Wick movies on fuboTV and Chapter 4 on Starz, while The Continental is available on Peacock. Starting this coming Friday, December 20th, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will be showing in cinemas.
