Kraven Star Wants Spider-Man Crossover: “Give the People What They Want”

As a lifelong Marvel enthusiast who has witnessed the ebb and flow of its cinematic universe, I find myself both intrigued and excited about the recent developments regarding Kraven the Hunter. The character’s rich history and potential for an epic showdown with Spider-Man is something that fans, including myself, have longed for.

Isn’t a superhero complete without their iconic adversaries? With Kraven the Hunter gracing the silver screen now, he has officially entered Sony’s Spider-Man universe, although our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is nowhere to be found. Fans have been eagerly anticipating a meeting between these two characters for quite some time, but it remains unfulfilled. Not only are the fans excited about this potential conflict, but even the cast of the movie shares this sentiment. Ariana DeBose, who plays Calypso in the film, recently expressed her desire for an intense battle between Tom Holland’s Spider-Man and Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Kraven.

At the movie’s global debut in New York, she expressed to Variety that this film is intended to be self-contained and serve as an origin story, but she believes Kraven deserves a grand confrontation with Spider-Man. She pointed out that there’s an entire comic dedicated to it, suggesting they should deliver what the fans are eagerly anticipating. If there’s room for Calypso and Kraven’s tale within this, then that would be fantastic!

Over a long period, movies based on Spider-Man, as Sony owns the rights, have been the ones that have garnered significant attention. In contrast, standalone villain films have had difficulty gaining momentum. Before Kraven the Hunter was released, it was anticipated that its audience would be smaller than Morbius, which earned approximately $39 million in domestic box office sales. Some even speculated it wouldn’t reach the numbers of the lackluster Madame Web. Now, following its premiere, these predictions appear to be accurate, with underwhelming box office performance and a wave of negative reviews.

Pondering the scenario, it’s intriguing to imagine that Kraven might have followed a different path if he had been the main antagonist in “Spider-Man: No Way Home”. Originally, director Jon Watts intended to introduce the villain in the third film, but the Multiverse idea took precedence. Consequently, the confrontation was abandoned, yet both Holland and Taylor-Johnson appear open to a face-off between their characters. The actor portraying Kraven recently met with Holland, who stars in Marvel productions, at a Broadway play, fueling fan theories about a potential future encounter.

The last conversation I had with Tom was during his theater play, ‘Romeo and Juliet’, and let me tell you, he was incredible,” Taylor-Johnson shared with the publication. “He’s an outstanding performer, and I wouldn’t hesitate to collaborate with him again.

Director J.C. Chandor of Sony’s “Kraven the Hunter” film has expressed interest in delving further into the character’s storyline in future projects, particularly focusing on the “Kraven’s Last Hunt” comic arc. The movie’s finale presents an opportunity for Kraven to evolve, and as per Chandor, a confrontation with Spider-Man could serve as a fitting climax.

There’s a sense of excitement in the air as anything seems feasible, yet the prospect of Peter Parker encountering Kraven the Hunter remains tantalizingly close. Not too long ago, Tom Holland expressed his thoughts about the script for the fourth Spider-Man movie, stating that it was truly a film worthy of fan appreciation. With various parties suggesting or hoping for a battle between Kraven and Spider-Man, the possibility seems to be gaining momentum. Should this happen, it might not adhere to the same timeline as the latest movie in the series.

Kraven the Hunter is now in theaters.
