Yellowstone finale ends season in dramatic fashion with another major death

As a die-hard fan who has followed Yellowstone since its inception, I must say that this finale was nothing short of a rollercoaster ride of emotions. The shocking death of John Dutton and the subsequent revelation of his murder sent waves of disbelief through the fandom. But as someone who’s grown accustomed to the unpredictability of Taylor Sheridan’s storytelling, it was a twist that I eagerly devoured.

Warning: contains major spoilers for the Yellowstone season 5 finale.

The finale of the popular series Yellowstone has wrapped up, concluding Taylor Sheridan’s western tale in a dramatic manner, and it included yet another surprising demise.

In the second half of Season 5, it began with the main character John Dutton (played by Kevin Costner), who initially seemed to have taken his own life off-screen, but it was later uncovered that this was actually a murder.

Sarah Atwood (Dawn Olivieri) and Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley), the masterminds behind the scheme, enlisted hitmen to eliminate their adversary and manipulated evidence to mislead investigators from discovering the truth.

Unfortunately, their plan didn’t turn out as flawlessly as they’d imagined; Sarah, who participated in the conspiracy, paid the ultimate price earlier in Yellowstone season 5’s second half.

Currently, Beth (Kelly Reilly), John’s child, was aiming to exact revenge on her long-lost biological sibling, whom they were estranged from.

After her father’s funeral, she confronted him in a fierce fight. Initially, she had the advantage, using bear spray to momentarily blind him, but later, the impact of the spray wore off, causing the situation to reverse against Beth.

As a movie enthusiast, my heart raced as I watched the fierce confrontations between the estranged siblings unfold, uncertainty hanging heavy in the air about who would make it through the nail-biting finale. However, what transpired next took me by surprise and left many of us thrilled – Beth emerged victorious over her wicked brother, a turn of events that delighted fans everywhere.

In simpler terms, she finished off her opponent decisively following an essential help from Rip (Cole Hauser). Swiftly and effectively, Rip handled the corpse and tarnished Jamie’s standing by wrongfully accusing him of initiating the conflict and running away.

Previously within the show, Thomas Rainwater, played by Gil Birmingham, successfully reclaimed the territory that the Dutton family had owned for many generations in the past.

Under financial pressure due to estate taxes threatening to compel them to relinquish their land to a large corporation for development plans contrary to the last will of John, the family arrived at an agreement as a solution.

Consequently, they choose to offer the land at a remarkably low cost to Rainwater’s tribe, thereby significantly reducing the taxes due on the transaction, and securing guarantees that the land remains undeveloped instead.

Beth and Rip too, acquire a modest piece of land for themselves, where they can peacefully spend their later years according to their wishes.

To sum up, the ending finds Beth and Rip in a robust situation, implying there might be room for a future series extension – an idea that was hinted at before, yet leaves some viewers disheartened because they hoped to see Costner’s main character involved in the last act.

In the second half of Yellowstone season 5, attempts are made to link the show’s prequel spin-offs, particularly 1883. This is done through mentions of James Dutton, played by Tim McGraw in the miniseries, and Elsa Dutton, portrayed by Isabel May.
