As a seasoned movie-goer with a penchant for all things eerie and enigmatic, I wholeheartedly endorse adding “A Ghost Story for Christmas” to your watchlist. This chilling tale of Edith, a woman who seems to be awaiting her demise in a dimly lit room, is a masterclass in atmospheric storytelling.

In her sickly chamber, a gentle haze pervaded as drapes barely pulled shut let in narrow strips of sunlight, softly illuminating the corners.
She lay there, eyes wide open, staring at the ceiling.
It’s likely that she appeared deceased. However, her husband, say if he were coming from their well-kept garden for a check, might initially perceive Edith as dead. But then he would spot the cigarette in its holder and the trail of blue-grey smoke rising like a genie, which could indicate that she was actually alive.
As a cinephile, I couldn’t help but smile at that captivating scene, reminiscent of a cherished moment in one of my tales. Lying comfortably on the bed adorned with exquisitely embroidered cushions and shawls, bathed in hues of reds, violets, and Roman purples – the colors of romance, conflict, and retribution – I felt as if I had stepped into an enchanting fairy tale or one of my own narratives.
Waiting for what?
How would Death come?
Edith gasped. There was something at the foot of the bed
A sad expression crossed Edith’s face, as memories of her loss continued to hurt her deeply, despite the passage of time. Perhaps, it was him who would appear, standing by the bedside, with outstretched arms and a smile on his face.
Ah, Mummies! This was just what I had in mind. It wasn’t the allure of the mysterious that ignited Edith’s curiosity and made her eyes shine like polished buttons. It was the scent of familiarity. Of the spacious, tidy, white halls of the Bloomsbury Museum. The glimmer of gold. The clear, English explanations, not dull, old French. The kindly guides looking at her over their half-moon glasses, explaining this dynasty and that Pharaoh in the soothing tones of home. Indeed, a trip to see some mummies! That sounds like a perfect plan.
As Edith and her sister followed the French guide, a figure in a worn-out blue jacket and pants resembling old sail cloth, they noticed an unpleasant smell. The guide had mentioned this aroma was due to the mummies not being embalmed like Egyptian ones but instead preserved by the unique soil of that region.
The door to the vault had been skreaked open by then, revealing a small, cramped room and tiny blue lamp, burning and sputtering and sending a curl of smoke upwards, just like Edith’s cigarette.
But the vault was not like the Bloomsbury Museum. It was very much not.
The hundreds of skeletons seemed to grin at little Edith
Edith took a sharp breath, finding something ominous at the foot of the bed, crouched and shrouded in shadow. Upon closer inspection, she let out a chuckle, realizing it was merely her worn dressing gown hanging from the corner of a papier-mâché screen – an old travel memento, patched together numerous times over the years.
She moved her head on the pillow to lessen the ominous appearance of the clothing, but the eerie feeling remained. It seemed like someone was hiding in the corner, a shadowy figure hunched and still, watching with eyes as black as the fuzzy outlines around it.
“I’m not afraid of you,” she said aloud.
