As a lifelong gamer who grew up with a controller in my hand and Capcom games filling my shelves, this recent news has me positively beaming like a certain blue bomber! The return of Okami and Onimusha is just the tip of the iceberg, it seems, as Capcom is diving headfirst into their vast library of dormant IPs.
Last week at The Game Awards, Capcom unveiled “Onimusha Way of the Sword” and also announced a sequel to “Okami”. These unexpected announcements left fans of both franchises delighted, as they had long been hoping for new installments. It appears that this could be a developing trend for Capcom, hinting at their intent to delve deeper into their extensive library of games and revive titles that have been absent for some time. In a statement on their official website, the publisher indicates that these two games are merely the beginning, suggesting that fans can anticipate continued focus on Capcom’s most successful franchises while they explore their catalog further.
Besides unveiling major new games annually, Capcom is also concentrating on breathing life back into older series that haven’t seen a new game in a while. The company aims to boost its worth by using its extensive collection of content, which includes resurrecting old franchises like the ones mentioned earlier, and consistently producing top-notch, efficient games.
There’s been no definitive announcement yet about what Capcom might release next, but given their rich portfolio of intellectual properties, it’s reasonable to expect they could be planning something new. A popular candidate for a comeback is Dino Crisis, which has been absent from the scene for over two decades. In a recent Capcom Super Elections poll, Dino Crisis garnered an impressive 80,769 votes when fans were asked about their desire for a sequel or new game in this survival horror series. This suggests that there’s still considerable enthusiasm for the Dino Crisis franchise among gamers.
Fans have long hoped to see the return of the Mega Man Legends series, which previously produced two popular games and a highly acclaimed spin-off. Unfortunately, development on Mega Man Legends 3 for the Nintendo 3DS ceased in 2011. The last new entry in the series was released more than two decades ago, despite having dedicated followers. At this stage, many Mega Man Legends enthusiasts might be content with a compilation of the games in the series, similar to the way various Mega Man spin-offs have been released over the past few years.
Currently, fans of Capcom are asked to show some restraint as they eagerly await what’s in store for their favorite gaming franchises. The company boasts a collection of beloved game series, and it seems there are numerous titles ripe for a revival, such as Okami and Onimusha. Even though Resident Evil, Monster Hunter, and Street Fighter are Capcom’s most prominent intellectual properties, there are many other games that could benefit from another opportunity to connect with players.
