Yellowstone Finale Roasted by Fans, “Crazy and Cringe”

As a seasoned cinephile with over three decades of TV viewing under my belt, I must say that the finale of Yellowstone left me with a peculiar mix of emotions. On one hand, I appreciate Taylor Sheridan’s creative vision and his role as Travis, which added a unique dimension to the narrative. However, the sudden surge in Travis’ screen time, seemingly at the expense of Kevin Costner’s John Dutton, was indeed jarring and, dare I say, self-indulgent.

On Sunday night, the most popular cable television show struggled to reach its conclusion, leaving many viewers disgruntled with the way things were wrapped up. Over the past couple of years, Yellowstone has faced a frustrating journey towards its finale due to Kevin Costner’s departure and extended production delays pushing Season 5 beyond the 25-month mark. With the main series now concluded (though a sequel is in the works), some viewers are left with a bitter taste, making one wonder if this might impact the upcoming spinoffs.

Over the weekend, enthusiasts of the TV series Yellowstone didn’t hold back on expressing their emotions about the last episode. Some posted on social media to voice their sadness that it was ending, while others weren’t afraid to criticize the series for its finale and overall final storyline.

As a devoted fan, I found myself grappling with a shift in focus during the latter part of Season 5 – the unexpected prominence of Travis, skillfully portrayed by our beloved series creator Taylor Sheridan. Though Travis had a minimal presence throughout the series until then, his character took center stage following John Dutton’s demise. This transition felt somewhat like exchanging Kevin Costner’s character for Travis, which left many viewers, including myself, with an uneasy feeling.

One day, I long to discover a person who cherishes me as much as Taylor Sheridan appears to cherish himself,” one viewer commented. “The last episodes of Yellowstone seem excessively focused on him, creating an odd blend of fascination and discomfort.

One viewer expressed regret that Travis took center stage during the last few episodes, commenting that they “might have gotten another 8 episodes featuring Kevin Costner rather than all this nonsense.

Among fans, Travis garnered significant backlash, yet there was also widespread discontent over the fate of a beloved character. To put it mildly, Kayce found himself bearing the brunt of blame among the show’s characters, absorbing much of the repercussions from the previous seasons. Consequently, this allowed other characters to move forward (potentially returning for future spin-offs).

One fan called it “lazy writing” to pivot so many things in Kayce’s direction. “Sure ok,” they wrote.

A wide array of reactions, ranging from positive to negative, has surfaced concerning the finale of Yellowstone. Particularly noteworthy is the response from long-time enthusiasts of the show. It remains intriguing to observe how many of these devoted followers will return for the upcoming spin-off series.
