The sequel to M3GAN, titled M3GAN 2.0, is set to premiere in cinemas on June 27, 2025. Two teaser images have been released, hinting at the return of the sentient android doll and revealing that Cady, our protagonist, has inherited her aunt Gemma’s (Williams) passion for robotics. In one of the images, Cady is depicted wearing magnifying glasses and soldering wires meticulously, a daring move given her past experiences with the doll. According to Johnstone, the ending of 2022’s M3GAN served as the foundation for this sequel, as he had unutilized ideas from that point in the storyline.
He mentioned that he initially conceived a unique concept for the conclusion of “M3GAN” which, while intriguing, might not have been as fulfilling. However, by opting for a sequel, he got an opportunity to develop and extend this idea into a more comprehensive storyline. The concept proposed by James complemented his beautifully, making it a perfect blend of both ideas. Consequently, the collaboration resulted in a harmonious combination of their thoughts.

In a shift from her role as an executive producer on “M3GAN”, Williams has taken a more active role in the production of “2.0”. She revealed that initial discussions about this film focused on what constitutes a successful horror sequel, acknowledging that it can be challenging to avoid the temptation of fan service. In her words: “It’s really hard because the allure of delivering on whatever aspect was the most popular in the first installment and overdoing it in the second is so strong.
Regarding the upcoming sequel to M3GAN, it’s crucial that it reflects what viewers enjoyed most about the original film, while also addressing the ongoing discourse and apprehension surrounding AI’s impact on us, our children, and society as a whole. As Johnstone explained, M3GAN essentially embodies all these concerns. The sequel will likely maintain its campy tone, use witty dialogue, incorporate popular TikTok dances, and delve deeper into the evolving conversation about AI.
After its debut in January 2023, M3GAN immediately captured public attention and now, further developments are underway. Besides a sequel, a new installment called SOULM8TE is currently being produced. This film, penned by Kate Dolan, features Lily Sullivan, David Rysdahl, and Claudia Doumit in the lead roles. It’s an enthralling thriller that delves into the life of a man who purchases an android to assist him in dealing with his wife’s passing, and it carries an erotic undertone.
