Shonen Jump Could Be Losing Two of Its Biggest Series Very Soon

As a long-time enthusiast and connoisseur of manga, I can’t help but feel a bit melancholic as I read about the potential endings of two more beloved series in Shonen Jump: Mission: Yozakura Family and Undead Unluck. The magazine has been my faithful companion for years, providing me with countless hours of entertainment and emotional rollercoasters. The ends of My Hero Academia and Jujutsu Kaisen this year were bittersweet; I’m not ready to say goodbye again so soon!

It appears that Weekly Shonen Jump magazine, known for housing popular series, may be saying goodbye to two more titles earlier than anticipated. Over the last year, this publication has undergone substantial transformations, with key pillar franchises like Kohei Horikoshi’s “My Hero Academia” and Gege Akutami’s “Jujutsu Kaisen” concluding in 2024. This shift has caused the magazine to place more emphasis on emerging series that aren’t as prominent yet.

I’m grateful to see that the older series in Shonen Jump, including Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece, are maintaining their ground, and some recent debuts like Takeru Hokazono’s Kagurabachi are gaining traction. However, the latest developments hint that Shonen Jump might be nearing the conclusion of two more long-running franchises. The potential endings for Hitsuji Gondaira’s Mission: Yozakura Family and Yoshifumi Tozuka’s Undead Unluck seem imminent.

Shonen Jump Has More Endings on the Way

From an onlooker’s perspective, it seems that the ending of “Mission: Yozakura Family” is more imminent as it initiated its final arc this past spring. This climactic storyline has pitted the Yozakura family against Asa and his offspring, with numerous battles unfolding over the past year. Monthly updates from Shueisha hinted at an accelerated pace for the conclusive battle, and indeed, several skirmishes were swiftly resolved – sometimes within a single chapter. Now, fans eagerly await the newest installment to witness the culmination of this epic final battle.

If there isn’t an extended conclusion after the final fight, similar to what was seen in “My Hero Academia” and “Jujutsu Kaisen” this year, then “Mission: Yozakura Family” might conclude as early as 2024. At the latest, it won’t extend much into 2025 if Gondaira maintains its weekly release schedule, including holidays for the magazine. However, predicting the end of the second series is more challenging since it’s unclear if it will be wrapping up soon.

Will Undead Unluck End Soon?

It’s uncertain if the popular series, Undead Unluck, will wrap up soon. Despite the storyline currently reaching new heights, fans are reluctant to see it conclude. However, recent reports suggest that the manga by @WSJ_manga on X might be nearing its “Super Climax,” hinting at a significant ending, much like the final battles we’ve seen in other series such as Hajime Komoto’s Mashle: Magic and Muscles back in 2023.

Different from Yozakura Family, Undead Unluck hasn’t declared that it is wrapping up its manga series, making the “Super Climax” a surprising turn. Yet, recent chapters suggest that the story may be nearing its end soon. If both these series do indeed conclude in Shonen Jump, the magazine will likely undergo further changes and need some impactful releases by 2025. It’ll certainly be an intriguing year for Shonen Jump to see what replaces these popular franchises.
