As a long-time fan of Balatro, I’ve followed its rise to fame with a mix of admiration and amusement. The developer, Localthunk, has a knack for turning the unexpected into the extraordinary, and the PEGI age rating debacle was no exception.
Localthunk, the mysterious developer behind poker-like sensation Balatro, has poked fun at the PEGI age rating debacle which marred its launch. The game was pulled from the PS Store after its age requirement was inexplicably raised from 3+ to 18+ for the use of “prominent gambling imagery.” This snafu was ultimately sorted out (in that Balatro was allowed back on console stores, but the 18+ rating remains), but it nearly altered the Balatro story forever.
As a gamer myself, I find it amusing – or maybe ironic is the better word – that Localthunk, who’s so staunchly against gambling, explicitly mentioned in their will that the Balatro IP should never be associated with casinos or used for gambling purposes. It seems like a distant memory now, given how far the indie game has come since its success at The Game Awards.
Given the nature of X, the developer explicitly stated that the situation was a joke. However, some people persist in interpreting Localthunk as sincere, possibly due to this very fact. It seems if you’ve already got a mature audience rating, why not add a touch of the unusual?
