Borderlands 4 Will Cut Down on Borderlands 3’s Toilet Humour, Narrative Director Promises

Borderlands 4 Will Cut Down on Borderlands 3’s Toilet Humour, Narrative Director Promises

As a seasoned gamer who’s seen more than a few sunsets in the gaming world, I can’t help but feel a sense of relief and anticipation upon hearing the words of Gearbox’s narrative director, Sam Winkler. For years, I’ve found myself torn between the addictive gameplay of the Borderlands series and its… less appealing attempts at humor.

So far, Gearbox and 2K have been relatively quiet about Borderlands 4, but what we’ve seen hints at a change in tone compared to Borderlands 3. The 2019 release was undeniably a well-executed looter shooter and a commercial hit, but it faced criticism for its heavy use of humor some found crass or unfunny, particularly toilet humor. However, based on statements from its narrative director, it appears that Borderlands 4 is moving away from this type of humor.

Taking to Twitter, Gearbox’s Sam Winkler touched on the topic, stating that though he couldn’t yet say much about Borderlands 4, he agrees with “criticism of Borderlands 3’s overabundance of toilet humour”, before adding in a follow-up tweet that its sequel will be doing things differently.

Winkler wrote, ‘I’m not denying there are toilets, but if the term ‘skibidi’ appears in the game on my watch, I’ll shed genuine tears.’ Paul Tassi from Forbes jokingly suggested we’d have a gun called Hawk 2A, and when another developer asked if it was true, I felt like putting my hand into a garbage disposal.

For years, humor has played a significant role in the Borderlands experience, and while opinions differ on whether the series has effectively pulled it off, it’s clear that it’s been an integral part of the franchise. As for Borderlands 4, only time will tell if its humor will be more successful. However, the new direction is certainly intriguing.

The release of Borderlands 4 is scheduled for 2025, available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and personal computers. Keep an eye out as a gameplay trailer will be unveiled in the early months of the year, so stay tuned!

I can’t discuss too many details about BL4, but I stand by my critique that BL3 had excessive bathroom humor.

In simpler terms, If the term “skibidi” appears in the game during my supervision, I might shed genuine tears. Paul Tassi playfully suggested that there would be a gun named Hawk 2A, and when another developer asked if it was true, I felt like I wanted to put my hand into the garbage disposal.
