James Gunn Reveals the Surprising Influence Top Gun: Maverick Had on Superman

As a seasoned cinephile who has witnessed the evolution of special effects from the days of “You’ll believe a man can fly,” I am beyond excited for James Gunn’s upcoming take on Superman. Having grown up with Richard Donner’s groundbreaking 1978 film, it’s fascinating to see how far we’ve come in terms of visual storytelling and the technical prowess behind it.

One of the slogans for the 1978 original Superman was “You’ll think a man can fly,” as its groundbreaking visual effects showcased superhuman abilities unlike anything seen before. Nearly half a century later, film effects have reached unprecedented heights, both in terms of scale and realism. This posed an interesting challenge for director James Gunn when it came to the upcoming Superman, as he aimed to offer a fresh take on actor David Corenswet flying as Superman. Gunn was greatly influenced by Top Gun: Maverick when creating the aerial action scenes. The new Superman is scheduled to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.

During a set visit for the movie, Gunn explained that he’d prepared an extensive paper detailing our approach to action, our philosophy behind it, and how we execute it on screen, keeping it both airborne and grounded. He added that one of the challenges was making it appear as if we were shooting things in the sky, just like in movies such as ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ and ‘The Suicide Squad’. However, doing action sequences in the sky is particularly difficult.

He went on to say, “We drew inspiration from movies like Top Gun: Maverick, as we too are capturing aerial scenes. A significant portion of our action sequences are filmed using drones flying alongside Superman and his companions, enemies included, in the sky. These scenes were shot on sound stages. We have access to some of the world’s top drone pilots who work with these miniature, high-performance drones. This allows us to capture a lot of footage and create magic spontaneously during filming, as I always do.

In simpler terms, if we were to express that the movie scene has significantly evolved since Richard Donner portrayed Christopher Reeve flying in Superman, it would be an understatement. While Donner was instrumental in initiating superhero action, modern visual effects have shifted towards relying heavily on green-screen technology for depicting alien interactions. This technology not only makes the impossible seem possible but is also economical and efficient to use.

The drawback, however, is that with so many studios using the same techniques, it’s more challenging to find ways to aesthetically and stylistically stand out. While fans have yet to officially see footage of Superman, Gunn’s comments imply he has found ways to channel traditional filmmaking methods while also utilizing cutting-edge camera techniques to deliver something that feels entirely fresh.

Superman is set to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.
