As a gaming enthusiast with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that Astro Bot’s journey has been nothing short of extraordinary. From its humble beginnings as a PS5 tech demo to becoming the undisputed champion of 2024, it has truly captured the hearts of gamers worldwide. The game’s charm lies not only in its exceptional platforming and character design but also in its nods to gaming history through cameos from beloved VIP Bots.
The tiny robot that proves its capabilities continues to receive additional hardware components. As anticipated, Astro Bot was a big winner in various categories at this year’s PlayStation Blog awards. Notably, it was crowned as the Best PS5 Game, outshining other strong contenders. These victories follow its near-perfect sweep at The Game Awards 2024, where it triumphed in four out of seven nominated categories, including the coveted Game of the Year award.
Since its release in early September, Astro Bot has been reminiscently captivating gamers. As the third installment of the Astro Bot series and a direct successor to the free PS5 demo titled Astro’s Playroom, this game marks Team ASOBI’s first full-fledged title. In this game, you play as a charming little robot named Astro, embarking on various planetary voyages and world trips to reunite with your Bot friends and repair your PlayStation 5 spacecraft. The game’s exceptional platforming and memorable character appearances (as hidden VIP Bots) quickly elevated it to one of the year’s top titles. It has garnered numerous accolades, including Studio of the Year at the Golden Joysticks and four Game Awards (Best Family Game, Best Action/Adventure Game, Best Game Direction, and Game of the Year). Now, Astro Bot boasts a few more trophies to its collection, making it even more celebrated in the gaming community.
The fan-voted PlayStation Blog Awards declared “Astro Bot” as the top PS5 game, with stiff competition from other recently released titles. Ultimately, “Black Myth: Wukong” by GameScience took second place (Gold Trophy), followed closely by “Final Fantasy VII Rebirth” from Square Enix in third (Silver Trophy) and “Stellar Blade” by SHIFT UP in fourth (Bronze Trophy). Notably, all games except for “Black Myth: Wukong”, which was also released on PC, were exclusive to PlayStation.
In addition to winning the Platinum Trophy five times across various categories, Astro Bot also picked up Gold Trophies in Best Soundtrack and Best Graphical Display. Notably, it won several accolades at the PS Blog Awards: Best Art Direction, Best Use of DualSense, Best Audio Design, Best Accessibility Features, and Studio of the Year for Team ASOBI. Even though there was no accompanying event like The Game Awards, the multiple wins serve as a powerful demonstration of Astro Bot’s exceptional quality.
In the previous year, the top honor for the Best PS5 Game, the Platinum Trophy Award, was given to Insomniac’s Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. The games that followed in the rankings were Baldur’s Gate III by Larian Studios (Gold), Final Fantasy XVI by Square Enix (Silver), and Alan Wake II by Remedy (Bronze). Notably, PlayStation-exclusive titles often win these awards, with fan votes playing a significant role. However, the impressive nature of these wins remains undiminished, as they showcase the games that audiences believe to be the finest releases of the year.
Last week, Astro Bot unveiled a fresh, festive level as a holiday gift to its players. This appears to be the last new content added to the game, having previously introduced speedrun-focused planets featuring new VIP Bots such as Eve from Stellar Blade and a character from Helldivers 2. Despite this, it’s clear that the game will continue to captivate fans for years, encouraging multiple replays.
