Queen of the Ring Trailer: Emily Bett Rickards Transforms Into Mildred Burke

As a passionate admirer of the world of professional wrestling and its rich history, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming film, “Queen of the Ring.” The trailer alone is a testament to the powerful storytelling that lies ahead, and the prospect of delving deeper into the early years of women’s wrestling is truly captivating.

The trailer for the highly anticipated women’s wrestling film chronicling the early years of the sport, Queen of the Ring, has arrived.

The movie, titled as Jeff Leen’s book, narrates the story of Mildred Burke (played by Emily Bett Rickards), one of wrestling’s most iconic figures. It transports us back to a period when women’s wrestling was banned across the nation. According to the summary, “a lone single mother from a small town takes up the challenge, risking danger to alter societal norms as she rules America’s toughest sport, eventually earning the title of the first female athlete to amass over a million dollars in history.

The movie boasts a diverse cast that includes both renowned Hollywood actors and professional wrestlers. AEW’s Toni Storm, Kamille, and Britt Baker take on the roles of June Byers, Clara Mortensen, and Debbie Nichols, respectively, while Naomi from WWE portrays Ethel Johnson, the first African-American Women’s Champion. Furthermore, Francesca Eastwood brilliantly plays Mae Young, another legendary women’s wrestling figure.

For close to two decades, Burke reigned supreme in the professional wrestling realm, maintaining the NWA World Women’s Championship for most of that period. Her career started with wrestling against men at carnivals, and out of the 200 opponents she encountered, just one managed to defeat her. Billy Wolfe (Tyler Posey) was her mentor, initially partnering with her before their relationship ended due to his unfaithfulness.

The drama Queen of the Ring, penned by Ash Avildsen, is orchestrated by Aimee Schoof, Isen Robbins, BD Gunnell, and Jim Ross. The star-studded cast features Emily Bett – Rickards, Josh Lucas, Marie Avgeropolous, Deborah Ann Woll, Cara Buono, Adam Demos, Martin Kove, Kelli Berglund, Damaris Lewis, Gavin Casalegno, and Walton Goggins. Additionally, it invites Jim Cornette and Mickie James as special guests.

The popularity of professional wrestling has surged in Hollywood after the debut of “The Iron Claw” by A24. This movie chronicles the Von Erich family, whose impact on the wrestling world – both positive and negative – remains indelible.

Apart from that, Netflix garnered the interest of millions earlier this year with the debut of the documentary series Mr. McMahon, which delved into wrestling’s most contentious figure and his numerous scandals. Earlier this year, WWE legend Booker T announced plans to bring his personal story to the big screen as well.

Queen of the Ring hits theaters in March 2025.
