New Sonic the Hedgehog Funko Pops Launch In Time For Sonic 3

As a lifelong fan of Sonic the Hedgehog and someone who grew up with the animated series “Sonic X,” I am absolutely thrilled about this new wave of Funko Pops! From the Treasure Hunter Knuckles to the adorable Big the Cat with Froggy, it’s clear that they have paid attention to the niche and unique characters from the Sonic universe. And let’s not forget the Super Sonic exclusive adorned with emeralds – talk about a collector’s item!

In this latest collection of Funko Pops, Sonic the Hedgehog and his associates (either allies or adversaries) return. The latest release features Knuckles as a Treasure Hunter, Rouge, an Omega Pop Plus, a supersized Big, and even a Super Sonic bedecked with emeralds. It’s fascinating to see Big the Cat accompanied by Froggy, who perches contentedly atop his head. This wave appears to highlight lesser-known and distinctive characters from the Sonic universe, particularly Big, who debuted in the very first episode of “Sonic X” in 2003.

In this latest wave of Sonic the Hedgehog Funko Pop figures, you’ll find them stocked at Entertainment Earth and Amazon as of 12pm ET today, December 18th. The Pop Plus Super Sonic With Emeralds, exclusive to Target, went live early and was snapped up swiftly, but be sure to monitor that link for potential restocking. The upcoming movie starring the blue character known as Sonic the Hedgehog, titled “Sonic the Hedgehog 3,” is due to premiere in cinemas this coming Friday, December 20. With Shadow the Hedgehog being confirmed as the main villain in this flick, fans have been guessing that the plot would be heavily influenced by Shadow’s debut in “Sonic Adventure 2.” In an interview with GameRadar+ back in April, producer Toby Ascher hinted at this very possibility, stating, “The movie will be a massive, exciting adventure filled with fun and awesomeness, drawing significantly from ‘Sonic Adventure 2’ and other games that the core Sonic Team fondly remembers from their childhood.

Following this confirmation, fans delved deeper into speculation as to why other beloved characters, such as Rouge the Bat, are absent from the movie. In an exclusive interview with ComicBook for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, director Jeff Fowler shared his rationale behind leaving out characters from the series.

In making this Sonic movie, we found ourselves primarily concentrating on the character Shadow. With a cast of such magnitude and four computer-generated characters already present, it’s essential to exercise caution and not overcrowd the scene. Shadow’s background is crucial to get right, so we prioritize that aspect. However, these elements are all part of the Sonic movie, requiring careful balance. Every story detail needs to be well-proportioned. Additionally, Gerald (Robotnik) must also be skillfully integrated into the narrative. As a result, screen space becomes limited when introducing these intriguing characters and providing engaging storylines for them.”
