Jujutsu Kaisen Ending Isn’t Bad But Left a Major Question Unanswered

As an avid manga enthusiast with over two decades of reading various genres under my belt, I must say that the conclusion of Jujutsu Kaisen left me both satisfied and puzzled – a bittersweet cocktail that only the best stories can serve. The final battle against Sukuna was nothing short of spectacular, with Yuji Itadori carrying the torch as the new bearer of hope for the Jujutsu world.

In September 2024, the manga series “Jujutsu Kaisen” reached its poignant finale. The narrative commences with Sukuna’s emergence and culminates in his conquest, marking the completion of one endless cycle of struggle. With Sukuna vanquished and a fresh start for the Jujutsu world on the horizon, it falls upon the young sorcerers to restore order. Although the ending may appear hurried, it wasn’t entirely unfavorable. Nobara reappears during the climactic confrontation with Sukuna, ensuring Megumi’s safety. Yuji assumes the mantle of Gojo’s legacy, heeding his final advice. Even the arrogant and domineering “Sukuna” from “Jujutsu Kaisen,” the self-proclaimed King of Curses, accepts his fate and aspires to change things if given a second chance.

In the final chapters of Jujutsu Kaisen, numerous mysteries remain unresolved, with Yuji’s Domain Expansion being one of the most intriguing. Although we’ve witnessed the use of Domain Expansions by various sorcerers, Yuji’s remains a mystery, particularly since he employs it against the primary antagonist during their climactic battle. Unfortunately, the workings and specific details of his Domain Expansion remain undisclosed. In chapter 265, Sukuna learns about Yuji’s childhood through various scenarios depicted in the manga, yet these revelations do not provide insight into his Domain Expansion. We know that he acquired it after awakening the Shrine technique, but its completeness, name, and operation principles remain shrouded in secrecy, leaving readers without answers to these questions.

Yuji’s Unnamed Domain Expansion Represents His Growth as a Sorcerer

Achieving Domain Expansion represents the zenith of Jujutsu magic. It’s a skill that only extraordinarily gifted practitioners can refine and fully master. Even formidable sorcerers like Suguru Geto, Hajime Kashimo, Aoi Todo, and Kento Nanami have not attained this pinnacle. Interestingly, Yuji develops this skill during his training before the confrontation between Gojo and Sukuna. Since consuming the King of Curses’ first finger, viewers have observed Yuji’s growth incrementally. Although the progress is gradual, he remains resilient in his quest for self-discovery and understanding the worth of his existence.

As a fervent admirer, I can’t help but feel unsatisfied when it comes to fully grasping his masterful application of techniques in the series. A Domain Expansion isn’t just an upgrade; it frequently serves as a mirror, revealing a sorcerer’s essence, convictions, and inner realm. For instance, Sukuna’s Malevolent Shrine echoes his godlike arrogance. This shrine resonates with his self-perception as a deity, as it embodies his destructive and death-dealing nature, symbolized by the skulls adorning the shrine.

Throughout the series, Yuji struggles with his sense of identity, so giving him a proper domain could be a great conclusion to his character growth. Gege Akutami may have intentionally chosen to leave it out to focus on other aspects of the story. However, as the main character, not explaining his Domain Expansion makes his conclusion seem incomplete. But we will never find out the answer unless Gege plans a Jujutsu Kaisen sequel, which isn’t likely as of now.
