As someone who vividly remembers the chilling terror of my first encounter with The Thing back in 2002, I can confidently say that Nightdive Studios has breathed new life into an old classic. The remastered version is like a long-lost friend, all grown up and polished, yet still retaining the rough charm that made it so endearing.
One of the earliest articles this author ever wrote for Push Square was about Computer Artworks’ terrifying 2002 horror shooter, The Thing. A decade later, Nightdive Studios has worked its magic on a remaster, breathing new life into this rough-around-the-edges gem.
It’s impressive that CA managed to create a sequel that mirrors the original horror classic, albeit with some unexpected, entertaining twists. The ambiance in The Thing Remastered is particularly noteworthy, as it maintains a heavy and oppressive feel, much like it did back in 2002. However, Nightdive’s enhancement of the game adds a unique charm to it, even though it retains its original “feel” from that era.
The revamped lighting and significantly improved textures are noticeable, along with adjustments to several game mechanics. The infection and trust systems are still present, but they operate more seamlessly than in the year 2002. Many elements that were once apparent as artificial have been made more convincing. In the past, your squad mates would disobey commands if not properly equipped or healed, which was represented by the trust system. The infection system, similar to a scene from the movie, required checking team members’ or your own blood for infection, revealing any hidden enemies within. Earlier versions of this game had scripting that felt overly staged, but now, outside of a few instances, it feels much more organic and realistic.
The adjustments made to the aiming mechanism are noticeable, but they don’t entirely resolve the issue. In 2002, the firing felt unsatisfactory, and unfortunately, that’s still the case in the remastered version. However, I must admit that the act of aiming itself feels more fluid than before, with the first-person mode being a significant improvement.
Nightdive Studios has significantly upgraded a treasure from the turn of the millennium, delivering a stunning visual makeover that amplifies its exceptional ambiance. However, it’s worth noting that the shooting mechanics might not meet expectations.
