Filmmaker Tyler Perry Details How He Brought the Historical Drama The Six Triple Eight to Life

As a film enthusiast with a deep appreciation for both storytelling and history, I eagerly anticipate Tyler Perry’s latest project, “The Six Triple Eight.” The fact that this film is based on a true story about an often overlooked group of heroic women makes it all the more intriguing.

Film producer Tyler Perry has tackled numerous projects over his career, not just in the stories he helps create, but also in the parts he plays in bringing these narratives to life. His latest endeavor, titled The Six Triple Eight, might be his most ambitious project so far, as he delves into the world of historical dramas. As both the writer and director of this film, Perry was responsible for not just telling a gripping story for Netflix, but also for paying tribute to the real individuals who served as its inspiration. The Six Triple Eight is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on December 20th.

In conversation with ComicBook, Perry shared how he discovered the project: “Nicole Avon had forwarded me a promotional video about the project, created by some producers. Upon seeing it, I was taken aback and thought, ‘Surely you jest! This is a real story? There were 855 Black women who served in World War II, yet their story has never been told?’ I felt both ashamed for not knowing their history, as I value such knowledge, but also compelled. I knew I had to be part of it; I wanted to share this untold story.

The Six Triple Eight is based on the unique Women’s Army Corps unit of color that served overseas during World War II. In spite of encountering racism, sexism, and harsh working conditions, they were steadfast in their commitment to serve their country with honor and integrity. Assigned an exceptional mission and bound by their resolve, these unsung heroines brought hope and broke down barriers.

As a cinephile, I proudly acknowledge that I drew inspiration from the legendary masters of historical epics while crafting this movie. George Lucas was among the first to offer his insight on it, having directed the captivating ‘Red Tails’ and appreciated my work. His storytelling prowess is truly inspiring, as is Steven Spielberg’s masterpiece, ‘Saving Private Ryan’. The collective genius of these directors has undoubtedly left an indelible mark on my filmmaking journey.

Apart from encountering tonal difficulties with the project, Perry’s commitment to maintaining historical accuracy also introduced some unforeseen obstacles.

Perry found the task as demanding as anticipated, yet fortunate to have a dedicated team meticulously overseeing each detail, ensuring historical accuracy for every frame and shot. Without their assistance, it would have been impossible. Thus, having them along was simply delightful. When it came to the costumes, Perry mentioned that preserving authenticity was the biggest hurdle. Since the costumes were crafted prior to filming, and all shoes were produced in Mexico to perfectly replicate their original counterparts, there were numerous logistical challenges that needed to be addressed regarding the costumes.

The movie boasts a remarkable cast consisting of Kerry Washington, Ebony Obsidian, Milauna Jackson, Kylie Jefferson, Shanice Shantay, and Sarah Jeffery. In addition, Oprah Winfrey and Sam Waterston lend their talents to the film, while Perry expresses his awe at encountering cinematic greats like them firsthand.

The director shared that it was essential for everyone involved, from Oprah to the rest, to consistently communicate their ideas and aspirations. They all desired the director’s approval, a sense of unity in the project, and top-notch performances. Furthermore, they were united by an overwhelming spirit of collaboration, with a mutual aim to create history together. It was truly inspiring for the director to have such a wealth of awards and storied pasts supporting them in telling this unique story.

Since comic book films and grand superhero productions have been consistently successful at the cinema, Perry openly confessed his lack of enthusiasm for exploring that particular genre.

Perry expressed, “That’s not the realm I inhabit, buddy. It gives me joy to witness others bring it to life as I would want to. I find myself drawn to Ryan Coogler and other directors who truly relish their work. I’m captivated by their unique perspective because I can’t view it from their vantage point. For me, Six Triple Eight is where I excel, crafting stories like these. However, a comic book adaptation – I know my niche.

He commented, “However, if someone else were guiding and narrating the tale, I must admit, I’m unsure if I would be able to pull it off correctly myself.

The Six Triple Eight is set to debut on Netflix on December 20th.
