New Lilo & Stitch Trailer Puts a Hilarious Spin on Iconic The Lion King Moment (And It’s Adorable)

As a film enthusiast who grew up with Disney’s magical touch, I must say that the new live-action Lilo & Stitch movie has me all nostalgic and excited at the same time! The clip they released recently, featuring our beloved blue alien channeling Simba from The Lion King, is just the icing on the cake. It’s like Disney is speaking directly to my heart with these delightful easter eggs!

Disney recently released a heart-tugging preview for their upcoming live-action version of the beloved film, Lilo & Stitch.

In a manner reminiscent of Simba from the Lion King movies, the distinctive small blue extraterrestrial is being hoisted aloft. However, Stitch’s response to this situation is just as you’d anticipate. Adorned with pool floats, he manages to wriggle free and ends up in the sea. Disney has a knack for including subtle references or Easter eggs across their various projects that dedicated fans will readily identify.

Interestingly, during the promotion of Lilo & Stitch in 2002, there was a behind-the-scenes segment that depicted Rafiki hoisting Stitch atop Pride Rock, assuming he was Simba. However, it was Timon who clarified that he was absolutely not a small, brave lion.

Dean Fleischer Camp was the director of the movie, which was written by Chris Kekaniokalani Bright, Dean DeBlois, and the original creator Sanders. The production of Lilo & Stitch is handled by Jonathan Eirich and Dan Lin, while Louie Provost, Tom Peitzman, and Ryan Halprin act as executive producers.

Tia Carrere, who was the voice of Lilo’s older sister Nani in the original movie, tells PEOPLE: “You will encounter characters like me and Jason Scott Lee, and you’ve just heard our voices. We’re adding some hidden references [for] those who watched it before, as well as for the younger audience joining us now.

For this upcoming installment, Carrere takes on the role of Mrs. Kekoa. Alongside returning favorites Chris Sanders as Stitch and Amy Hill as Mrs. Hasagawa, the latter will be portraying a new character, Tūtū. Making her acting debut is Maia Kealoha, who steps into the shoes of Lilo. Furthermore, Sydney Elizebeth Agudong, Billy Magnussen, Hannah Waddingham, Courtney B. Vance, and Zach Galifianakis round out the star-studded cast.

In 2002, the movie “Lilo & Stitch” was released and quickly became a popular choice for families everywhere. Even though more than two decades have passed, it continues to be relevant in pop culture. The upcoming 2025 film is a live-action adaptation of the original animated tale, focusing on the heartwarming and comedic account of a lonely Hawaiian girl and an alien fugitive who assists in healing her fractured family.

Originally a solo movie, it blossomed into multiple seasons of the beloved Disney Channel series that aired from 2003 to 2005. I found myself immersed in the daily escapades of Lilo, Stitch, Nani, David, Pleaky, and Jumba Jookiba. The animated feature film grossed an impressive $200 million at the box office.

Lilo & Stitch surfs its way into theaters on May 23, 2025.
