The Batman Director Confirms Talks Have Started About The Penguin Season 2

As a lifelong movie enthusiast who’s seen more Batman iterations than I care to count, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and trepidation about the potential second season of ‘The Penguin’. On one hand, Colin Farrell’s chilling portrayal of Oswald Cobblepot was a standout in both the movie and the miniseries. However, his recent comments about not wanting to put on that suit again have me slightly concerned.

According to a recent interview with Variety, director Matt Reeves has shared that preparations for the second season of “The Penguin” are currently being discussed. During this interview, Reeves and Zoë Kravitz also spoke about the upcoming sequel to “The Batman“, among other topics. However, it’s important to note that while discussions are ongoing, a second season is not yet guaranteed.

As a movie enthusiast, when someone recently asked me about “The Batman – Part II”, I shared my excitement by saying: “We’re currently working on the script and plan to start filming next year.” When the topic shifted to potential TV spinoffs, I couldn’t help but bring up the success of “The Penguin”. In response, the director mentioned: “Oh, we’ve been discussing with [showrunner Lauren LeFranc] about another season. That was an exceptional journey. I just feel incredibly fortunate. These characters aren’t mine; they belong to the world. It all comes down to finding a way to express something personal through them.

Initially planned as a limited series on HBO, “The Penguin” was inspired by the popularity of Robert Pattinson’s portrayal of Batman in the 2022 hit film, “The Batman.” This interpretation emphasized Batman’s role as an exceptional detective, allowing for a deeper exploration of the gritty street-level crime and corruption within his story. The character of Oswald Cobblepot, better known as “the Penguin,” played by Colin Farrell, had a minor part in the movie but was significantly expanded upon in the eight-episode series.

To date, there have been hints of a second season primarily from Reeves, along with excitement from fans. Despite being a miniseries, the series was highly acclaimed and prosperous, and Reeves indicated to The Hollywood Reporter that a second season is under consideration. Conversely, Farrell expressed reluctance about returning to Gotham. He stated that his character led him into a gloomy mental space as a method actor, while the prosthetics were challenging to wear. He candidly said: “I never want to don that suit and headpiece again.

Part II”, with Reeves also signed on to direct a third film following this one. The sequel is anticipated to bring back Pattinson as Batman, Wright as Jim Gordon, and Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth. However, there’s been no confirmation yet about Kravitz reprising her role as Catwoman, and the interview didn’t suggest that she and Reeves have discussed this possibility.

Currently, you can stream “Batman” and “The Penguin” on Max. Keep an eye out for future updates regarding the sequels to both, as more information becomes accessible.
