As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but marvel at the sheer resilience and determination of Maxim Krippa, the Ukrainian businessman who’s made a name for himself not just in real estate, but also in the gaming world. His acquisition of GSC Game World and his vision for STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl have turned this relatively unknown company into the center of Ukraine’s biggest game release ever.

It’s been more than a decade since the concept for STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl was born, but surprisingly enough, the highly anticipated sequel by GSC Game World managed to recoup its costs in just under a month as per Maxim Krippa, the company’s owner, in an interview with Forbes Ukraine.

An unrecognized entrepreneur rose to prominence in Kyiv following the conflict, primarily through his involvement in the real estate sector. However, it was Krippa’s acquisition of GSC from Serhiy Grigorovich that catapulted him into the limelight as a key player in Ukraine’s most significant video game release to date.

It’s estimated that developing the game cost around $10 million or more, a figure Krippa didn’t specify explicitly, but one that the company has already made back.

Under Krippa’s leadership, GSC Game World opted for a marketing approach similar to CD Projekt Red of Poland. Essentially, this involved utilizing multiple communication channels simultaneously to reach and engage a broad audience effectively.

In this scenario, “STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl” is just one aspect we’re considering. During an interview, Krippa hinted that GSC is in talks with Netflix about adapting the “STALKER” series into a television show, but nothing has been confirmed yet.

Regarding the game, it has been verified that earlier rumors were correct – we can expect two additional story expansion packs in the coming days, along with a multiplayer feature.

The intricate details surrounding whether or not STALKER 2 might transition to a multiplayer setting have sparked intense speculation among its enthusiasts. Depending on the approach taken, this game could either evolve into a captivating cooperative experience that delivers an immersive atmosphere or face the risk of turning into a catastrophic failure.

Everything Is Bigger In Ukraine

A standout note from Maxim Krippa’s interview with Forbes Ukraine is how the company grew.

In 2020, I became the proud owner of GSC Game World, a studio that had just entered its second phase and boasted a single title under its belt – Cossacks 3.

At that point, the company consisted of 65 staff members, which included management. Over the period from 2020 to 2024, the requirements for developing STALKER 2: Heart of Chernobyl led GSC to significantly expand its workforce.

At present, Krippa reports that approximately 470 individuals are dedicated to STALKER 2’s development, with 270 of them continuing their work from Ukraine, despite the ongoing conflict and a shift in studio location to Prague.

As reported by the Ukrainian IT Community portal, Maxim Krippa holds approximately 82% of the stocks in GSC Game World. The remaining 18%, however, are under the control of Evgeniy Grigorevich, who has effectively led the company since its reopening.

Evgeniy Grigorevich serves as the CEO of the company, but he’s also the younger sibling of the company’s original founder. Additionally, he played a pivotal role as Head of Game Direction for STALKER 2 in addition to his CEO responsibilities.
